Accidents happen...

My oldest was in a car accident yesterday. He rear ended another vehicle.. it seems the traffic in front of him stopped suddenly and he looked away for a split second and missed it, so went right into the truck in front of him. We're not upset with him, these things happen. He's extremely upset with himself. He was in tears when it happened. He now has no car until we figure out what is going on with his. There's a good chance it's totalled. The whole front end is smooshed in. It looks like the radiator is damaged.. but they haven't even popped the hood yet to see what sort of damage has been done internally. They assessed the exterior damage which is the hood, fenders, bumper etc and said that alone is over $4,000 worth of work. We only bought the car for $6,000 a few month ago so my guess is the insurance company will total it. So now we have to figure out what to do about getting my son another car. He has no money of his own. He just got an apartment with friends and is finding the financial struggle to be a bit more than he can handle.. but we are doing what we can to help him out. The important thing is that nobody was injured!

Wow! Thank goodness no one was injured - that's the important part! Oh but your son . . . I can only imagine how he feels . . . the emotions of going through such an accident. He is fortunate to have such supportive parents - I hope together there can be a way for him to get another car soon!

It's not looking like we can get another car right away. I was planning to finance another one for him, but his insurance rate is now so expensive he can't afford it. We have to save up and buy him a beater and then he can afford the insurance on it.

@much2say He's doing allright for the moment. He is walking distance from hubby's work so he just walks up there and takes hubby's car... but then I have to go pick hubby up later. Sometimes my son's roommates will give him a ride, so that's helpful.

@katsmeow1213 Ugh, that high young male insurance rate. I know things may be a bit difficult for him without a car - hopefully he can pull his resources together to be able to manage getting to places in the meantime.

You're right, thank goodness he isn't hurt! When I had my first wreck, even though it was the fault of the other guy, I was convinced my parents were going to be angry. Like you, they weren't. I hope you can find a good deal on a different car.

We have to wait on another car. He can afford a small payment, but he can't afford the insurance. If he got an old beater the insurance would be affordable, but if we finance a car he's looking at between $300 and $600 a month. We don't have the cash for a beater right now...

Well I'm glad nobody got hurt but sucks the car may be totaled. I hope he can find a new cheap one soon. He probably just shaken up and i would be too. Glad you are there for him and I'm sure he appreciates it.

Car insurance seems so unfair at times. You pay through the nose for a used car and then the insurance on top of it and if something happens you are just out of luck. I feel for him. I am sending positive thoughts that things will work out for everyone. So glad that no one was injured!

Yeah, now his insurance rate went up to $600 a month.. talk about unfair! How's a 19 year old kid supposed to afford that?

Hey, the good thing is that nobody was hurt. Cars crash all the time for various reasons. Even professional drivers with 45+ years of no accidents at all experience it eventually. Your son shouldn't be upset. I understand that you can get connected to things, but it just has to pass. I'm sure his friends will understand everything.
