Rude Awakening

United States

There was lots of noise outside my home at 6:38 this morning. How do I know the precise time? It woke me up. I looked outside and saw three huge trucks parking on the street next to my home. Each was carrying a large piece of equipment. Sigh. Now what? Lately I have seen an odd truck in my area. It showed up several times on different days. It was from the water company. So I waited until their phones opened at 8:00 am, and called. After doing some research, the agent on the phone assured me that they are not doing any work in my neighborhood. It is now 9:30, and I know what is being done. The neighborhood that is tucked in behind mine is having work done on their street. I have seen the blacktop chewing up machinery. I am sure the neighbors knew, because this morning I saw all of their cars parked on my neighboring street, and not on their own property. But no one felt the need to let us know, or to follow the law and start any noisy work after 7:00 am. It’s pretty loud out there now, so I will have to change my plans for the day. I had intended to finish my book this morning, but the distraction and mood altering racket makes this a bad idea. Quiet time in residential areas of California is between 10:00 pm and 7:00 am, although they ignored it here this morning. What is quiet time where you live?

Quiet time in Switzerland is 10:00 pm and 7:00 am, just like in California. We also have a short quiet time from noon to 1 pm, it's to allow people to have lunch without noise.

A quiet time to have lunch? That is far too civilized for the U.S.

@JamesHxstatic @ElizabethWallace This is something I appreciate. Some people have a quick lunch and take a short nap before going to work.

How unusual to have a quiet lunch hour!

I live in SoCal and quiet time is a joke that goes unenforced. The cops consider noise complaints a nuisance and perhaps they might respond and even when they do, it's ineffective.

I have always had good responses when I have called to complain about noise, except when it was from the Verizon Center in Irvine.

Your neighborhood? Does the person you spoke to know the word 'noise' and how far it goes?

When I spoke to the police in Irvine, they knew that I was calling from three cities away, but there was lots of money involved, so it didn't matter that the concert was keeping everyone awake past 11:00 pm in the middle of the work week.

@celticeagle Cities need money, so this was one major way to get it. Sad.

I don't blame you for being annoyed at being woken up so early. Let's hope that the early start will mean that they get through the work so much quicker.

Well, I am not holding my breath on that one. It is logical, so probably won't happen.

I have no idea if we even have a quiet time. The road needed work done recently and they did all of that overnight while traffic was so low. So while I heard a lot of the noise, it was the perfect time to do it. Ambulances and fire trucks run all night long with different emergencies. I have no idea what keeps them so busy, but I hear them all times of the day and night. I haven't found much quiet time around here at all.

Quiet time applies to residential areas. It is part of real estate law. You have the right to quiet enjoyment of your home during nighttime hours. In a city, things are different. But emergency vehicles operate when necessary. Ambulances usually do not use their sirens at night in residential areas, just their lights.

@ElizabethWallace I do hear the sirens at night when they are going and then I hear them shut off as they drive through the neighborhood. Being that my apartment building is in a neighborhood and yet on a main street, I hear it all. And when I'm up and sitting at my table, or sitting up in bed reading, I see the flashing lights go by when they have the sirens off.

Since we live in a rural area we have no restrictions. Generally it is extremely peaceful and quiet.

Here in the UK it is between 11PM and 7AM. However at other times if there is too much noise then the environmental health officers can measure the noise levels and if it is excessing they can be issued warnings and fines!

Yes, quiet time is the same here. I would also have been upset to have that happen before 7:00 a.m., too ... even though I am usually up at 6:30. Who wants all that noise first thing in the morning, though?

I'm not sure we have a quiet time at all although I think in the cities they do as our friends who are plumbers sometimes mention that they can't start till x o'clock.

The area is very nice. Don't you have flats system in California? The residential area is quite calm and houses are dissipated. In India, people are not feeling the beauty of life. They stay in Flats where neither the ground is theirs nor the roof. They just lock their doors and stay inside watching T.V or Computer. Occasionally, go outside. Again lock their doors and stay inside after coming back.

It's usually quiet in my neighborhood from 11 pm - 5 am on weekdays. On weekends, it's peaceful for longer hours.
