Claude Monet - Part II - The House

This is the second part of a discussion on Claude Monet's house and garden in Giverny, France. The slideshow shows views of some of the rooms and some of impressionist paintings which hang in those rooms. The rooms have been left furnished as they were when Monet lived there. I loved the blue and white kitchen with the highly polished brass pots and pans. I think it is fair to say that they've been polished once or twice since Monet's time.

It looks like he was anything but a 'penniless painter'. Lovely house and gardens, thanks for showing them.

Glad you enjoyed the photos. He was relatively wealthy and employed a number of gardeners to start with.

Wow. I loved that gigantic window at the beginning with the view of the garden . . . oh I would love to have such a view! His house is definitely bigger than what we have here! Oh - imagine cooking in that kitchen - I would love that too!!!

@JudyEv Is that entire house (beginning of the video) HIS house? Seriously, that is huge - not to mention the garden area!

@much2say Yes, it was all his house. There was sort of two families living there. Too complicated to detail here. The garden is huge too with some on each side of the road.

They were employing cooks at the time, and I suppose that this kitchen expresses more the taste of Monet's cook than of Monet. An interesting image book to do would be a book showing the kitchens of great people.

@JudyEv All artists are not poor. A very interesting one is the kitchen of the house of Victor Hugo in Guernsey because he designed it himself.

@topffer Monet designed his garden himself and did a lot of the work himself too apparently.

For an artist, it seems he was quite wealthy. A book of the kitchens of the rich and famous would be very interesting I think.

@JudyEv That is indeed lucky. There is an artist side to my family. My parents did not encourage it because it usually doesn't put bread on the table.

@koopharper For every artist who is relatively well off there is probably 10 who are really battling. Same with musicians I guess and other creative fields.

He was one of the lucky artists who actually made some money during his lifetime.

I love the stove, I absolutely love that big coal stove. I have many brass pots, they are a pain to keep clean and shiny.

Brass has probably gone out of fashion. No one has time to be cleaning brass nowadays. The stove is beautiful isn't it?

It's nice to know that others are still loving his home enough to keep it sparkling! Too bad that doesn't happen for all of us!

@CRK109 Mozart's family were notorious for their 'scatology' (obscene literature that is concerned with excrement and excretion). Their personal letters are full of references to excreta and farting, etc. In their defence I don't think it was so uncommon in those days for people to write about such things. But now much of their correspondence is out there for all the world to see. Now that's something I wouldn't want to be remembered for.

@JudyEv I won't either, but it's pretty funny to consider. I wonder how many of these people that we really remember today ever thought they would be remembered all these years later? Probably not many of them at all! Food for though, my friend!

I love the blue tiles and the kitchen.. The number of pans which hang down seem to say that he was a foodie as well. I like the wall paper too.

@JudyEv prolly not, many family members sold off what they could, kept what they wished'n then 't times sold the residences to the highest bidder.

I don't suppose there are too many artists' residences which remain much as they were when the artist was alive.

He had a sick wife and two children (I think it was two) plus a housekeeper/nurse/mistress and her six kids. From what I've read, it was a busy household.

Lots of light and neat art, I don't follow the fine arts all that much but impressionism is my favorite. Many of the other art of that time period seems depressing. All your travels makes for been interesting

Some of the art of the Dutch masters of the time seem very dark and depressing to my mind, not that I know much about it at all.

You must have also seen the studio. The best collection of Monet paintings are at Musee Marmottan in Paris which also has other impressionist works.
