Chris Cotillo reports the news the Pittsburgh Pirates have claimed off waivers former St. Louis Cardinals catcher Eric Fryer to join their team on Sunday. Fryer returns to the team where he began his career in the Major Leagues in 2011. The Pirates needed an extra catcher since Francisco Cervelli who has been placed on the disabled list since June 10, 2016 with a broken left hand will be return to the team until his hand has fully healed. The Pirates currently have on their roster catchers Chris Stewart and Erik Kratz. Fryer will serve as their backup catcher. Fryer had been designated for assignment by the Cardinals on June 28, 2016 despite having a batting average of .368 playing in 24 games for the Cardinals this baseball season. Maybe the .368 batting average impressed the Pirates management to pick up from the waiver wire a former catcher of their division rival on Sunday.

@Deepizzaguy The only sport I pay any attention to is the Green Bay Packers. Otherwise I know really nothing about sports.

They were familiar with Fryer as he came from the Pirate organization to begin with.
