Now, firecrackers are often related to celebrations such as New Year's Day and of course July the 4th celebrations. Firecrackers are chargers with built in fuses encased in heavy paper casing. Firecrackers originated in China proving that not everything that comes from China is counterfeit. Unless, they come up with counterfeit firecrackers. How can you even do that? Back in the day, firecrackers were made with gunpowder. The gunpowder is encased in straw paper hardened with buckwheat paste. The fuse used to light these firecrackers was bamboo. The secret to getting the loud bang in firecrackers is packing the gunpowder very tightly. Like, what I wrote beforehand, firecrackers are commonly used in celebrations such as New Year's Day, New Year's Eve, Chinese New Years, Independence Day, and even during Halloween. There have been many incidents of firecracker related injuries and deaths and still, it is a thriving industry. Regulations have been passed to ensure that factories and workers involved in firecracker manufacturing are safe but these are not strictly adhered to. Here in the Philippines, fires often break out in stores selling firecrackers. More so, fly-by-night factories involved in firecracker manufacturing. Of course, during the New Year's Eve celebrations, there are a lot of reported deaths and accidents because of firecrackers. Children are often the victim and loss of limbs and/or eyesight is common. Do you set off firecrackers during celebrations? Did you set off firecrackers to celebrate 4th of July?

No, they have been banned in Switzerland, not only because they caused injuries, but also to protect wildlife and domestic animals. Many cats and dogs were scared by the fireworks, they run in the streets and were killed by the cars.

@LadyDuck hopefully, we will have a similar law passed here in the Philippines. A law like that will greatly reduce the amount of damage fireworks accidents can cause.

@allen0187 I am so glad that they passed this law, at least now only official fireworks can be fired, no later than 10 in the evening and people must be informed many days in advance so they can keep their animals safe.

In the news here locally a man had lost fingers on one hand due to not stepping back away after lighting some fire works. Ugh!

I have never been a fan of them so my kids and I do not light them off. My kids sometimes like them so if they are going on sometimes we watch the shows.

Not everyone is a fan of lighting one up but I know that a good number would love to watch fireworks shows!

I can sense some reluctance on your part but I do understand why it is so.

Never! They are too dangerous for all the reasons you mentioned. I do enjoy seeing professional fireworks.

When I was a kid, this was another "project" I used to work on...I would take some of my dad's shotgun shells, take them apart, and try to make my own. Mmmmm, I was perhaps too curious as a child.

Ain't you too young to be taking shotgun shells apart? Good thing no untoward incident happened to you.

We don't do it in our neighborhood. They make the pets scared and the bark and shriek. The cats find hiding places.

We are in the same boat. I'd rather watch from a safe distance that put myself in harm's way lighting up one of those things.
