Forced into change...

United States
July 5, 2016 3:58pm CST
Do ya e'er jest wish to punch somebody'n the nose? I've been feelin' that way lately. Not a good thingy's I'm usually purty easy goin'. The conglomerate AT&T bought out my local co-ops cell phone service last year. To say that I was'n shock'n horror'd be'n understatement. No doubt the FCC 's lost its bloomin' mind! They left no choice though, 's they cut off the use'f their towers if'n such'd not gone through. Bullies... Fer months I've been told 'twas required to switch completely o'er to AT&T's services. Fer months I ignored such, havin' no desire to do such. Then, a letter came'n the mail from my ol' provider. 't stated that's 'f August 1st, 2016 I'd no longer 've any coverage 'nless I switched. The bonus bein' that if'n I'd a contract already, they'd allow me to get outta't with no penalties 'r fees. Not that I've'd a contract'n o'er 12 years, momma needed to do such to get a new phone when she killed hers. She's rougher'n 'em than the young'uns, bless her heart. I've been lookin' 't phones 'n service plans fer 4 days now. I'm purty certain that Consumer Cellular'll be my choice. Only trouble's, they'll not lemme use my phone. My 12 year ol' Nokia flip phone that's ne'er givin' me a lick'f trouble, though's been through lots'f abuse. I could get a cheap $30 "I'm jest a phone". The family's convinced I need a smart phone - one that'll take lovely pics'n videos. Trouble's, I aint willin' to pay more'n a couple hundred dollars fer such. So's I hit the webber net'n search'f a phone that'd be compatible 'n hopefully last fer years. Seems there's no such monkey. The aunt said, "Don't buy the cheapest, yer gonna regret't!", from her own personal 'xperience. The daughter says, "Don't buy one with windows, yer gonna regret't!", also from her own personal 'xperience. Now I'm runnin' outta time 's the days keep clickin' by, soon it'll be the 1st 'f August - I'll more'n likely be phoneless. Which'd cause the family to go into panic mode. Anybody got suggestions? I need'n unlocked phone, preferably with 't least a 8mp camera 'n video capability. One that'll not break the bank 'n leave me'n regret. Change typically don't bother me much, but bein' forced into such makes me spittin' mad.

I have just a plain, old Samsung, flip phone that my daughter sent me; which I've never used. Someday, there will be only 1 phone company, 1 electric company, 1 gas company and who knows just one of @crazyhorseladycx .

I have a Nexus 5 that my son bought me for Christmas a year and a half ago, and I LOVE it! Both my second son and my older daughter have Nexus phones, newer than mine, that they bought themselves and they have no regrets.

i wonder if'n a nexus 5'd be compatible with consumer cellular? i'll need to look into such. the hubs's wishy-washy. been tellin' me fer years to upgrade my phone 'n now tells me to jest get 'nother basic flip phone - the cheapest i can find. don't reckon i knew there were so many choices 'vailable?? mind-blowin' to go online 'n shop fer the danged thingies, lol.

@Platespinner i've 'bout settled'n a motorola with a 13mp camera fer $150...shame i can't jest get a phone with a good camera without all that other schtuff, lol. i've no need fer such, although've been told that once i get't, i'll be usin' 't oft. i reckon time'll tell, eh?

I hate being bullied into change like this too.. These big players seem to be good at tying your hands being your back and get you to do their bidding. Hope you find the right phone within your budget.

aint they though? 'tis hard to comprehend that such's allowed by those who're 'pposed to prevent such, aint 't? i'm gonna go with consumer cellular - i can get what momma'n i need fer 'bout $35/month (countin' insurance'n my new phone) with no contract. this's near half'f what we're currently payin'. if'n i get'n aarp, i can save 'nother 5% off the monthly bill :D

Oh dear, I have the iPhone 4, 5 or 6?? I do not know. My husband bought it for me. He pays for it. I do love the phone since it takes great videos and photos, but my standards for video and photo quality are quite low. Someone here who is phone-savvy will give you a better tip as to the phone that fits your needs.

Just the mention of the word AT&T makes me nauseous. They gypped me when I had their service and owed me a big credit for over nearly a year. Getting my bill corrected was like pulling teeth. Those no good thieves charged me for phone calls I didn't even make! I complained to consumer affairs about their shoddy service. My friends recommend iphone and Samsung as good phones. Apple iphone camera takes real clear sharp photos.

i'd certainly not go with 'em 'fter this 'transition period' i've gone through. their service's been horrid 'n there's nobody here'n town to complain to 'bout such. jest 'n empty voice'n the other end'f the line. consumer celllular decided they do indeed've coverage here so i signed'p with 'em last week. i've a 45 money back guarantee so'm lookin' ferward to givin' 'em a test drive. i'm hopin' this motorola 3rd generation phone thingy i've comin' (hopefully'll be here tomorrow) 'll take great pics. i figure if'n i've gotta upgrade my phone (which makes no sense coz my 12yr ol' nokia still works jest fine - they jest wish folks to spend more funds...) i might's well dip my toes into one that takes pics 'n short videos, lol. those samsung 'n iphone gizmos t'were way outta my budget. i've hopes that the one i ordered doesn't disappoint - thankfully they've a guarantee fer that's well :)

There are so many choices out there, it is mind boggling. My hubby likes the iphones and I like android ones, and we both dislike eachothers phones, lol. Have you gone into the store of the carrier you want, amd had them show you some? They can explain them to you and show you how they work. Good luck!

jest pickin' a provider jest sucks :( i miss my home town folks who didn't roll their eyes't'cha. i've not been down to sears yet (where one can get consumer cellular), gotta get the health a bit better, hopefully this comin' week i'll be able to coz i'm runnin' outta time. the hubs dislikes all phones. 'course, he dislikes puters, too. but, i jest need a decent phone 'n if'n i can get such with a great camera/short video taker gadget? i'd be willin' to take a look't such :) thanks!

Strange that some ISPs are not compatible with all cell phones. I find it odd. We will soon be switching over to 4g and all cell phones should be GSM compatible. Fortunately mine is although it only has some basic features. I am happy with that as I have a great camera that takes great pictures. What is the minimum requirement of your new ISP. I suggest you go for a cell that meets those requirements at the least cost.

i believe they do such so's if'n yer unhappy with one place'n move to 'nother, ya gotta fork out the money fer a new phone - whether one's needed 'r desired :( part'f their many gimmicks i fear. i've decided'n a motorola moto 3 generation. mainly fer the camera, which i'm hopin' i aint disappointed'n - 'tis 13mp 'n video capability. can't wait to get't!

@allknowing thanks! i'm gettin' purty 'xcited 'bout't :) the funds saved with the new phone service versus what i've now 'll pay fer that new phone'n 3 months time - double bonus, eh? i'm near giddy with the prospect'f havin' macro capabilities, without spendin' $350 fer a lens fer my big camera, too.

All I can suggest is to get to a Walmart n look at their StraightTalk phones n service, it's a prepaid service so it could be you could use that ole phone of yers, not really sure, but hey, if it's prepaid n the unlimitied one is only $45 a month but they had another one with limited minutes for $30, just thought I'd toss that at cha.

momma's one'f those prepaid thingies from there years back - they nearly drove her nuts sendin' texts to her. sometimes tellin' her she needed to buy more minutes...e'en though she'd already o'er 300 still available. the pricin' there aint bad (noperz, they'll not take my ol' phone neither), but i aint too fond'f puttin' money into wally worlds pockets...jest a personal choice mind'ja. do 'ppreciate the heads'p though :)

@rebelann that part's semi-true. they ran off the mom'n pop places here, rarely hire folks fer 'nough hours fer 'em to be eligible fer benefits. 'n then there's those 'self check-out' lines....

Aggravating for sure. I'm supposed to go talk to a lady about chickens later. I told her I only have a flip phone. She won't put her address on Messenger on FB. My home phone service sort of works but she finally was able to give me her address. At the end of the conversation she said, "So you don't have GPS on your phone?" I said no and none on my car, either, but it runs good enough. Giggle from the lady before she hung up.

indeed :( folks don't comprehend that some'f 's 'd no need fer nothin' more'n a basic phone. 'course, she could'a sent'cha a text with such info i reckon? i've no gps either :) seems most folks don't e'en bother with actual maps these days...nor decent directions.

I don't do well with change no matter what part of life it's in. The recent technology change for us is cable going all digital...which then requires you have a special box for the TV's that don't have the other box etc etc. Plus now we have to watch the channels in the 2000 range if we want to see the full screen as only the digital is full screen now.

ugh, i despise the government 'n their decision to force all to those digital channels. our t.v.'s 14 yrs ol' 'n we've a box 'n antennae - if'n the winds blowin', we've no channels't all. the warnin's fer weather're cut off since we've not one 'f those fancy t.v.s. which we refuse to buy coz ours works perfectly fine otherwise. i don't mind change, 'nless 'tis forced 'pon 's like we've no brain 'n there's no other options...when there's.
