We wait for the phone to ring

We were out and about, on our way to buy some local apricots. The phone rang. It was our local animal shelter. Our little buddy boy's owner had called them, looking for him.
I gave them my phone number though I was tempted not to. He was supposed to call within a half hour. We've had a sad, teary dinner since.
We wait. We wonder about this mysterious man who lost his Blue Heeler dog. We try not to be mean to each other cause we're both of us on the edge as we sit and wonder and look at Rowdy Little Joe. (What's his real name??)

Don't you hate it when someone is supposed to call but doesn't. I'd think if the dog was that important to him he would have called as soon as possible.

This fella is really not ours to keep. Somebody suggested we say we'd give the owner 50 bucks for the dog and see what his reaction is. Its been about 2 hours now and no phone call.

I hope he does call - with such a nice dog, he'd probably want him back? But I understand being sad about having to give him up. I also hope his "dad" is a really nice guy.
