If you're going to be a one hit wonder, you've hopefully done a memorable song to heighten your status. And in the case of M's 1979 hit, "Pop Muzik," as the Trouser Press Record Guide put it, "oh, what a hit!" It's #1 in my Favorite 70's One Hit Wonders series. M is essentially Robin Scott, working with various sidemen over the years (David Bowie even provided hand claps on M's debut.) In 1979, M cleaned up with "Pop Muzik," a tune that rode the burgeoning late-70's new wave movement all the way to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It was M's only foray into the Top 40 (and, the only tune in this series to chart at the top.) And why not? It's fun, it's catchy, like disco with a new wave attitude. (I'm using the rules from Wayne Jancik's book The Billboard Book of One-Hit Wonders: An act can only have appeared on the Top 40 of the Hot 100 once. Any sub-charts don't count, and neither do countries other than the States.)
Pop Muzik was one of the first new wave singles to top the charts. The singles popularity was bolstered by this catchy video that featured Scott as a DJ sing...

A great song! Bouncy. It was played for years on alternative radio. Someone needs to start a classic new wave radio station like all those classic hard rock stations. Just music from late 70s to early 90s and Pop Muzik would be an anthem. I mean real radio not online stations.

Yeah, more than just an" 80's" weekend station. I'd listen to it.

I remember it.. vaguely. It is fun, but I mostly missed the disco thing, and the new wave.
