Selling my Shadow Boxes

We have recently had our lounge and kitchen painted. We had to take down pictures, photos, a clock , a calendar and various other odds and ends including some printers' drawers which I used as shadow boxes for my smallest ornaments and treasures. But I don't really want to put holes in the walls to put the boxes back up and I don't have enough tiny things to fill the shelves. So, as part of our decluttering efforts, we're selling the drawers on a local website. Someone is coming to look at them tomorrow. Do you grow out of collections from time to time? And sorry it's such an awful photo.

Yes, I hope so too. Anything you put in them has to be really small.

It is bad that you will get rid off them. You had collected the ornaments. Is it fine to put in the storage?

We are trying to get rid of some of our belongings as one day we will need to downsize and it will be easier to do that if we get rid of some things we don't need now.

@BellaDoc Kids can be terrible hoarders. Every week or two I'd remove 5 or 6 sheets of paper from the bottom of a drawer one kept his bits and pieces in. I didn't throw out anything that looked remotely precious but I was able to keep it down a little bit this way.

I had in mind to sell some of my ornaments but postage is now about five times what it was so I'm a bit put off about selling.

When I was younger, I used to collect unicorns and then clowns. I outgrew them many years ago.

What did you do with your collections? Were you able to sell them? Or did you give them away?

I'm not sure if we have Etsy over here. We seem to have everything else so I suppose we do. I must look into it.

@dianadee Our tastes change I guess. And if a collection is packed away there is not much point in having it.

Thanks. I have quite a few little horses but some are just that bit too big for these shelves.

When I sold my last home I sold my collection of angels to a couple who came and looked at them and wanted them all. Yes I grow out of collections from time to time.

We have plenty of room really but I'm not very good at dusting. And when we go it will be less for the boys to dispose of. It will be nightmare for them however much we get rid of. Of course, by then we could be down to a suitcase each in a nursing home. Now I'm getting depressed!

I don't collect as much as I used to, but I'm really bad at letting go of things. I had one of those hanging on my wall for years until one night the wire snapped and the whole thing came crashing down onto a bookcase in front of it. Most of the contents survived, but they'll been sitting in a box ever since. One day I'll have to sort through them and find a new way to display my favourites.

@JudyEv I've always been nervous about breakables, so I lot of what I collect is made of metal. I'd also stuck a lot of the stuff down, so that helped too. I know what you mean about dust being a problem though. That's part of the reason so much of my stuff is in boxes.

@Gina145 And you said the wire snapped during the night. Do you find these sorts of accidents always happen at night? I wonder if it is changes in temperature that cause wires to break at night rather than during the day.

I thought about having a narrow shelf right along the wall but we get quite a bit of dust here and in the end it seemed a bad idea. You were lucky that not everything broke.

Years ago I had a few of those - I 'outgrew' them since they don't really fit the decor of this house. I had many different collections over the years - when we had a differnt style home I was into cow and chicken decor. I kept a few cow cookie jars, but the rest went the way I got them - yard sales

@AbbyGreenhill This was the first new home I ever lived in and, although it is now 13 years old, painting the verandah woodwork and the two inside rooms has made it seem almost new again. With only two adults in the house, there isn't a lot of wall damage etc so it seems like brand new again - with nicer colours.

@Jessicalynnt That's handy. We really only have the fridge. I sometimes buy magnets when I'm overseas rather than bigger mementoes that eventually get stuck away in boxes.

I don't think it's awful. I think it's a good representation of what you're selling and I hope the person coming to look at it, likes it. I do. I haven't grown out of my collections yet. Though I have stopped buying anything new. I have four boxes already of knick-knacks and I'm not done packing them, and I have 17 oil lamps. I hope I'll have enough room for all my oil lamps in the new apartment.

@JudyEv I have the majority of my knick-knacks on my window seat which I've layered by placing a coffee table on top of it, which works very well. Then I have the rest scattered here and there in the living room and bedroom dressers. I know where I'm going to put the window seat in the apartment, so all my knick-knacks will be right where they currently are. However, the lamps might pose another problem and might not. We'll see. I have some with the knick-knacks.

@JudyEv I've been placing them in my mind already, so it will be fun to see it they will actually fit in that location. I also did some shopping at Wal-Mart today and looked at some things I'll be needing when I move in. For some reason I can't find all my towels. They seem to have just vanished. So I priced bath towels today. I haven't bought towels in a long time. They're expensive.

I have one small shadow box that housed my collection of dragons. I use the past tense because I took it down one day to clean it and left it and the dragons on the kitchen bench. Of course Banjo knocked it down and most were broken and are still waiting to be repaired. I also have a miniature book shelf that holds my collection of animals. I'm not ready to part with any of these yet but I am formulating a yard sale in my mind to off load some furniture and crockery and other things I no longer have use for..

Once those holes are in the wall. They'll leave their mark. That's great that you'll be making some sells. That will help generate more space. Take care.
