There are lots of Gardener’s Arms signs, mostly depicting someone pruning trees or pottering around in a greenhouse. This very striking heraldic sign goes for a very classical heraldic image, closer to depiction of full on agricultural farming than gardening, or even landscape gardening. A farmer/gardener stripped to loincloth to give a sense of the heat and hard sweaty labour he is enduring, works the dry hard soil. He is beautifully framed by twin nature goddesses bearing cones of plenty of fruit and veg, while a banner beneath his feet bears the promise ‘In the sweat of thy brows shalt thow eate thy bread.” Taking the motto out of the Latin gives it a distinct Northern British feel while using olde Englih spelling styles. The assurance is that the back breaking hard labour the Gardener is fully committed to will be fully rewarded in due course. This seems such a traditional sign, yet the pub is a post war estate inn, serving a major Wythenshawe housing area. At a time when many estate pubs are closing down, leaving whole areas bereft of a local social hub, The Gardeners has benefitted enormously from its direct proximity to a new Metrolink tram stop right outside. The sign artist really made this sign a labour of love. Arthur Chappell

I read that sign middle, then left then right, thinking middle was on top. makes more sense if you read it right....

That sign is truly a work of art. I think the Nature goddesses are twins.

It is handy that the pub is right outside a tram stop.

That really is a striking sign, and it's good that the pub is doing so well.
