Even if I too have cancer of the thyroid, hearing this medical update about this dear friend of mine, shocked me! He is one of the kindest friends I have. He is funny, always making us smile or laugh especially once he notices any of us is into a deep concern. Now, he doesn't smile anymore. Yes, he smoked when he was younger but stopped decades ago. But, after diagnosis, that history is all he blames now. His Oncologist recommended chemo come July 20. He refused. He said he is aware that chemo kills not only the bad but the good cells as well. His wife & their children are insisting that he submits for the chemo because, aside from the drugstore-like medicine cabinet that he has, it's their only hope for his survival. He said no. He said chemo will just drain their pockets & will only prolong his agony & those of his wife & children. He said he already accepted his fate. I don't know what to tell him!

I'm sorry to hear about your friend, Nena. Your friends illness is like of my nephew, son of my first degree cousin. He doesn't smoke but he has a 3rd stage cancer of the lungs and he now undergoes chemo and all of us are helping him to sustain his chemo, he's only 21 years old.

This is more frustrating, my dear Ida. Your nephew could be among those who are said to suffer a second hand smoke, brought by smokers around him! Gosh!

If anyone can encourage him it's someone like yourself who is successfully fighting cancer. But if he's decided, there's not a lot you can do.

My friend is never for chemo, my dear Momma. He said if he will die then so be it, than suffer so much (especially financially), without any guarantee of survival. I called his wife & tried to encourage her to persuade her husband to have chemo. She just cried.

Making my friend happy is too difficult now, according to his wife. She says he demands to be attended to, asking his legs to be massaged gently because it's too painful now. He doesn't like to eat anymore.

Especially because he is in so much pain now, my dear Anna. He can barely walk because, accordingly, the metastases has spread to his legs. I don't know what to tell him now, because mine is thyroid cancer ,& luckily, I did not suffer from so much pain (from the cancer itself & the radioactive iodine ablation treatments which I had).

@KnehKnah There is nothing you can say, but only comfort him. When you are so much in pain you do not want to continue to suffer.

i am sorry for your friend, and you too, my dear., if it is his will to not submit himself for chemotherapy, then his family cannot do anything, but prayers help in comforting them.

my heart goes out to all, my friend. sadly stage four lung cancer's not a great survival rate e'en with chemo/radiation :( perhaps 6 months...sometimes'p to a few years. that naggin' fear'f such reappearin' elsewhere weighs heavy'n the mind'n heart. i hope that his family 'n friends respect his wishes 'n find this time to help him celebrate his life, make certain that he doesn't suffer 'n can peacefully enjoy his time left'n this earth - makin' more happy memories with all he holds dear. big hugs 'n i keep ya always'n my heart.

Certainly there is a lot of evidence that chemo doesn't always do much good. I am so sorry for your friend - and for you too. You will need to be strong for his sake.
