Do I need to wet all the dirt?

I am trying to grow lettuce. I am waiting on bigger pots so I just started them here. I see that after adding a little water that the dirt on the top is still dry. I was reading that I should not over water the plants. But the dirt just came out the bag bone dry. I also set it in the sunny window.. I am thinking it should be at least moist. I don't know for sure though. These are pods that I mistakenly bought. I figured I would at least try. Thanks a bunch.

You want it all to be moist. Is there a drainage hole? I would water them good, let them drain in the shade for a little bit and then set them out in a sunny area.

@sharon6345 .....Oh, that's not good. No way to drain the extra water off. You don't want them to get water logged.

I some times put the seed first in between a folded, clean tissue paper and put it on top of the soil and put drops of water on the tissue, it would soften the pods and would germinate faster. Soil might contain insects or other micro organisms like fungus and bacteria that would attack a weak ungerminated seed. Tear out the tissue and plant in soil after it had germinated.

The are already covered in something. I don't know what it would be as I am new to this.

@sharon6345 use a dropper then or a syringe or the tips of your fingers to put drops of water on the exact spots where they are so you do not over water or flood, this way you have better control

@louievill hat is good advice. I used the tip of the water spout to por water right on top of the holes. Once glass had over run so I will look for a dropper Thanks

yes it should be moist. The seeds need water to germinate.

Yeah at least I would think enough water to make sure the dirt is wet enough I always afraid I am going to over water.
