There is no place for plagiarism at myLot

Definition of plagiarism as copied from Dictionary.com: ‘an act or instance of using or closely imitating the language and thoughts of another author without authorization and the representation of that author’s work as one’s own, as by not crediting the original author’ A hot topic at the convention the other day was the plagiarized speech. That is an example of plagiarism. But did you know that copying words from a dictionary, article or research paper and using them as your own here or elsewhere is plagiarism? It is! People can sue you for doing so. You can see that I gave credit to Dictionary.com – I copied those words from their site but I credited them for it. If you copy words, phrases, sentence or paragraphs from other sources and you don’t credit those sources you are plagiarizing. I also didn’t stop with the words I copied; I have added my own thoughts and words to this post. While myLot is more of a social site, we still need to do things the right way. I don’t think some understand that. Photo: pixabay.com/en/no-not-warning-text-prohibition-1426591/ http://www.dictionary.com/browse/plagiarism?s=t

It's only plagiarism if someone else thought of it and committed it to paper/print first... Intellectual property implies intellect, wisdom, knowledge. Many who copy-paste stuff here barely understand the language, I fear. Using a few choice phrases and jumbling the words around a bit is easy enough done, unless the author is lazy...

Those I've seen are by people who speak and understand English just fine, that's where the 'lazy' part comes in.

@AbbyGreenhill Yes, the search for a quick buck (or fraction of a cent, at any rate)...!

It must be said, however, that what's going on here is *nothing* compared to what was going on on bubblews. The earnings from the B site were a considerable part of the gross national product of several Asian states.

Whether it constitutes plagiarism would depend on the actual amount and specific originality of the text used. For example, I would not consider the use of a phrase like 'out of the frying pan into the fire' to qualify as plagiarism, despite how prolifically used the term has been.

@AbbyGreenhill That definitely would constitute plagiarism.

@hereandthere This is the sensible way to deal with such posts.

I realize all that - since I can't and won't tell you whose posts I am referring to you have to understand that the entire post consists of 'facts' that were copied directly from some reference sources. I would bet the farm you have seen one or more of them yourself.

You're right, of course. Unfortunately, plagiarists don't read such posts.

@MALUSE Since those who are doing it might not even realize (or admit) to it, they read these things and comment in the positive. I've seen it happen before. @pgntwo since reading is a big part of this site, those who don't have time to read aren't doing their part anyway.

depending on what it is even crediting a source isn't good enough, you have to have actual permission to use the quote. Most books say no content whatsoever can be used without the prior permission of the author.

Research books I assume can be used, or they wouldn't exist but they still need to be sourced.

@Mike197602 I don't think the stuff this person uses is copywrite stuff. At Yahoo and other sites we could use stuff but had to source it . Again my lot needs to handle it

@AbbyGreenhill I'm not sure so I go by what mylot says. "Copyright Policy. You may not post, modify, distribute, or reproduce in any way any copyrighted material, trademarks, or other proprietary information belonging to others without obtaining the prior written consent of the owner of such proprietary rights." So if something has copyright I leave it as I'm not going to get the written permission of the author to quote a line or two here. I do quote from wikipedia and leave links to the article but that is a different thing.

Plagiarism is a popular subject among writers on many levels. There are many sites that help people check their work before posting to be sure they have none in their work.

@AbbyGreenhill ....I understand. All I am trying to say is that there are ways to make sure the work is good and not plagiarized before posting it. Many people don't speak the language and so they plagiarize to make content easy.

Yes that is true - but the example I'm talking about the person copied word for word from reference material. It was done on purpose, not by accident.
