Mutant squash plant eats preschool children in Berkeley!

I know I'm kind of corn-obsessed, having gone to college in Iowa, but I feel the need to write about our squash plant at the preschool in Berkeley. I worked there Wednesday and volunteered there today. The corn is doing fine (it's over 7 feet tall now), but the squash is growing so big, it has started to grow over the slanty ramp where the children ride their tricycles at incredible speeds. OK, I exaggerated a bit in my headline. But the media does the same thing, so I figured it must be OK. There are at least five yellow squashes on the plant, and it may be the healthiest squash plant I've ever seen. When we harvest, we'll slice them thin and serve them to the kids at snack time. Hopefully there will be enough squashes that everyone can "help" with the harvest. I'm pretty excited.

Do not forget to try the flowers. Your title reminded me a goosebumps book that I have read years ago. I think that the tile is "Stay out of the basement". I loved those books.

@TheHorse It is interesting, a bit scary considering that those are books for teenagers.

@LadyDuck Oh, but teens like to be scared. At least I think they do.

Can't remember if we did that in Oakland or not. If we get enough, maybe we'll cook them up!

Ohhh, thinly sliced squash served raw is a wonderful snack. It's also a great way to get kids to eat veggies. If they don't think they're healthy and good for them they'll eat all that they can. I used to sneak out into the garden at home and snack on green beans and peas raw, along with carrots and other veggies that you normally think of serving raw. As a kid I loved veggies and Mom would fix an extra package of them just for me. I'd eat green beans (string beans) and spinach like crazy. My brother would slip me his and it would disappear in seconds. I'm still that way about veggies! I grow squash and I will let the zucchini grow to huge sizes, sometimes three to three and a half feet long and then I would stuff them with ground meat, veggies and top them with pasta sauce and bake them. Then I would sprinkle mozzarella cheese on top and serve that for dinner. My parents and I would "dine" on that for dinner for a couple of nights, it was fantastic!

@TheHorse ...with rational people...yes. I usually find elderly people and kids amusing..they have such weird thinking...today it was princess versus my dad. 2 years old versus 83 years old. Guess who won? Princess..she uses her smile as her weapon...she threw all the newspapers on center table as if it is her place to sit and eat...dad gave her the glare...she smiled her naughty smile and dad couldn't resist...for a moment I thought she would get spanking. lol. He just smiled..and laughed...

Being corn obsessed is a good thing, here in my part of the mid-west, pony! You KNOW what they make from corn! Mmmm! Oh! They also make moonshine around here, too, since it is not illegal to make it for yourself... It is only illegal here if you make it for and/or sell it to someone else! You should stop and see my still sometime when you are passing thru! I am actually happy to hear that you are corn obsessed, since those pea plants you started out with could have taken you for all you were worth, if you had let them start betting with you on things!
A new study by researchers in the U.K. and Israel found that plants can assess risk and reward.

@TheHorse I was sure you would like it, pony. I ran across it while doing research for an article I wrote a few days ago. I bookmarked it so I wouldn't forget it and then I forgot it anyway! SMH!

We're gonna cook the next few with garlic and onion. The corn was a bigger hit with the littlies raw.

@TheHorse It's great when the fruit start developing and you get quite excited to find perhaps three then you go poking around among the leaves and there might be another 6 hiding.

I'm really happy about it, and so are the kids. The squash plants at Ground Squirrel Gardens (out in the desert of Concord CA) are about 1/3 as big.
