Are Kids Getting Smarter?!

My 3-year-old grandson is surprising me as he grows up. First thing that surprised me was - he started uttering words (English) when he was 11-month old. Maybe the reason was he loved to watch shows for kids on TV. At 13-month-old, he was already talking like a 3-year-old. When he was 2 years old, he started playing kids' games online using a tablet. Just recently I taught him how to operate my laptop using the mouse. I taught him a couple of times to log into his favorite kid's games online. This morning he entered our bedroom and woke me up, asking me to turn on my laptop so he could play his favorite game. After turning on my laptop and logging into his favorite game, I went back to bed. But I was worried a bit thinking he would damage my laptop; so, I decided to check on him. He seemed to be at ease and having fun playing. I asked him - - "Are you okay?" And this was his response - "Papa, don't worry, everything is under control!" Yikes! I never expected him to say that! Are TV shows, kid's online games, and other modern things making our kids smarter compared to pre-computer-generation kids?!

I don't really believe they are. The intelligence is there even when we can't see or hear it. I had to take my twin boys out of a church service to keep from disturbing other worshippers. I was marching up and down the lobby with one in each arm chatting with a friend we was in the lobby for a different reason. My boys were not at that point capable of speech at all. For fun the two of us asked the twins to point out different letters of the alphabet for us. My wife and I had not yet put any real effort into teaching them their abc's but they knew them almost completely. My friend and I were flabbergasted. They only confused letters that sounded almost the same. They of course grasp new technology very quickly but I'msure they lag in other areas.

So far, my 3-year-old grandson is not showing any sign of being shy and introvert tendencies. He loves to play and interact with other kids. And he loves to play with girls his age! hehehehe!

Oh they really are smart. This tech generation kids are way ahead. I remember how surprised my father-in-law was when my son was playing an online game and reading his earnings in the millions at 3 years old. When he was 7, he played a very popular online game on his iPad and was chatting with some Korean people who asked him how old he was and when he said 7, the Korean man said he was an Unlce already!

@antonbunot 90% of the children's genes come from the mother daw. So I agree.

@toniganzon Thanx, our kids and grandkids are exception . Their only significant "mana" sa mama/grandma was their singing voices.

maybe with most but i would say your teaching and care is what makes kids smart. seems the ones i spent most time with and did not have to leave to work was the ones turned out most intelligent. we did not have computers when mine were small but they were talking and doing exstrodinary things as babies. my oldest talked up a storm with anyone would listen at 16 months and was asked if he wanted to skip a grade 2 times in school. so i would say your grandson is just super intelligent

I am always in awe of how easy it is for these kids to know how to do the things. My grandson actually learned how to read super early as he needed to know what his video games were telling him to do.

@marsha32 I think kids learn fast these days because of modern technology. When I was a kid there were no computer, iphones, tablets, advanced TV sets, and so on. . . All we got were transistor radios, Olympia typewriters, and black/white TV sets that sometimes could not get a channel. LOL . .

If anything, certainly little ones are exposed to technology at an early age . . . they are exposed to it and have access to so much more knowledge than we ever did. Their brains have are gotten more exercise perhaps than those of us who played with only sticks and rocks . Are they smarter? Well they know more simply because they have been fed more information.

Good topic you raised and yes the development of different gadgets brought a huge changes in today's generation.Today's kids so clearly express their intention, sometimes it makes us keep starring upon them constantly without blinking. But it has bad effect too because introducing of different gadgets also brings maturity to adulthood before time.

Here's where I get a smidge cynical... No, he's not getting smarter, he's just learning... He's three now, but wait until he becomes eight or thirteen where all that intellect will vanish...
