If I had £1.5m+ I may be interested...but I don't. Also it's out of my area and I like the three counties so will be staying here I don't get why it's just grade 2 though as I'd expect it to be 1. Anyway...the purchase price will put off a lot and with the added expense of upkeep you'd need serious money to buy that. PS...my building is nowhere near as old as I though it was...don't know how I got it so wrong. It's only 1840's where I thought it was older. Still nice though and the renovations are coming to an end so hopefully soon I'll be able to put up a few pictures.

Oh I know it was only wishful thinking. It would probably take me two lifetimes to amass the money it would require to have that place... I look forward to seeing the pictures once you can take some. Do you know who built the place? You may have said before but I forget.

@ScribbledAdNauseum no idea yet but the landlord loves this place and I'm getting more friendly with him so I'll ask when I see him next. Although we live in the same place we don't come across our neighbours that much here. The downstairs ones invited me to a party last night but I was too tired to go as I had a few hours of work that day.

Oh wouldn't that be cool? I think not too long ago a castle in Scotland was up for sale . . . apparently it belonged to the ancestors of the same last name as Hubby's (not sure if it was truly related to the family) - but it was definitely not upgraded. The price wasn't bad, considering it was a castle. But oh my gosh what would we do with a whole castle? Just $2.5M sounds really inexpensive!

@ScribbledAdNauseum That's the thing, just how do find such trusted information? And why weren't these castles just part of an inheritance so we don't have to do all this research ! I just know Hubby's family name goes back to a clan (perhaps it's that way with most Scots) . . . it's very well possible that somehow they could be related to the original castle owners even a teensy weensy bit!

@much2say and wouldn't that be cool? If I could, for sure find the actual information for where my ancestors lived (actual residence) in Antrim throughout history? Oh I'd love to visit the place!

As you know I've been looking into my ancestry and apparently there might have been atleast TWO castles that my family can lay claim to. However, the information isn't the most trusted it seems and so while my ancestors still could have lived in a castle, it isn't one that is known. There are so many people with the same last name, I bet your hubby could have descended from that family, just in a third cousin twice removed type way?

@ScribbledAdNauseum If that was a bad word hen it is one that I have never come across.

I think I'd rather prefer paying the bill to have someone else do it. Though I am sure it would require several people at constant work to keep it spickk and span. (Just came across another "bad word" according to mylot's filter. I had to add a K to the word above otherwise it wouldn't let me post it.)

@Asylum I doubt that you would as there isn't quite as high a volume of latinos in the Uk as there are in the US. That word is a derogatory slur against latinos.

It's cheap for a castle but remember when you buy it, it does not stop there, you need to have maybe double that amount to maintain it plus the yearly taxes you have to pay. I would probably consider opening some parts of it to the public so it would have income. A medieval market could also be placed on the lot selling souvenirs. I would organize a travel tour, invite film makers and those into the paranormal for overnight stays..they could come and go but i would still be lord of my castle

@ScribbledAdNauseum I was also thinking of the energy cost to light up the whole castle plus the lawn, one solution would be to use alternatve power or maybe authentic torches like they use too. Filtering water on the moat would be another problem, it's already difficult to maintain a medium sized pool, what more the moat, perhaps it could be used to breed and sell fishes. Feudal lord taxed serfs which definitely we do not have, boy i wonder how it feels just to be floor sweeper of that place, yeah we have to hire a lot of people when i decide to give my share but so far i have less than 2 dollars on this site

@louievill Ahahha Yes mylot will definitely not be funding my share for sure! You have brought up some good points, things like the moat that I did not even think of.

It sounds like you've got it all planned out. Yes, there would DEFINITELY need to be lots of revenue coming in to keep up with all bills involved, including upkeep and I wouldn't even begin to know the price of keeping the lawn trimmed! wow!

That is fairly cheap in comparison to houses in London which could go for around the same price and without all the land with it. The land would be very valuable. You would probably have a nightmare heating the place though! I am sure it would be snapped up at that price by some millionaire!

Yes heating was something I would be concerned about. Though I suppose that is where the fireplaces would come in handy and plenty of wool blankets! If someone does grab it up, I'd like to find out who it is. It would obviously need to be someone well to do,especially with all the requirements to keep it's heritage intact.

Some guy started building a castle near here, but I guess he ran out of money and it never got finished. It's for sale, but who would want a castle that's not very far off the highway!? If you can get the price of your castle down to around $500,000 USD, let me know!
• United States
25 Jul 16
I doubt that would ever happen (getting the price down.) The castle you speak of? I think I may have heard of it. It was't something recently built was it? It was built a long while back? I know I definitely would not want a house, let alone a castle, so close to traffic!

@1creekgirl I am in NC actually but have never been to Greenville. I may have to look it up and see about getting a few friends together and make a day out of it.

Well if eight of us occupy the bedrooms? I am sure that we have plenty of use for the parlor's etc. I don't know, I'd have half a mind to keep the majority of the room barren.
