What becomes of my Facebook when I die?

After I started my day with great enthusiasm and sincere happiness, and singing a song of nobody Breaking my stride . . . God had another plan . . . my bowling friend who had his leg amputated last August from gangrene, died from heart failure late last night. I am sorry for not being cheerful today, my stride was taken, the wind from my sails and a good friend from my ever Saturday. This brought on thoughts of so many of my friends that have taken the last train to heaven, so many still have their Facebook's active, what now? I have decided that if one day, my life is suddenly taken from me, that my children close my Facebook and all my other Social media sites. I have a list carefully placed in my Last Will and Testament with log in names and passwords to all of them. "If I should go before the rest of you Break not a flower nor inscribe a stone, Nor when I’m gone speak in a Sunday voice But be the usual selves that I have known. Weep if you must, Parting is hell, But Life goes on, So sing as well." This post is dedicated to my Friend - rest dear 'J' and be at peace. There are many that will miss you! Have you made plans?

You can already make plans actually. Go into your settings and you can choose someone from your friends list to have access to your account. You can also choose for them to be able to or not be able to look at your personal stuff, like private messages etc. I have selected a good friend of mine to take over my account when the time comes. So Facebook is already one step ahead of you and lets people already decide what can be done.

I am glad for that - because its terrible to have memory flash backs every week of people that have passed on - some days it hurts too much. I hope people will read your response as it clarifies things nicely

I am sorry for the loss of your friend. As for Facebook: a friend of mine lost his brother last year. His children and grandchildren used the account to stay in touch for a while, sharing pictures and memories, then closed it down. It worked well because many of the kids are scattered. I'm not sure where everyone is. Most of them are here in the States, but one daughter teaches in Ireland. It turned out to be a nice, happy thing for them.

yes - use it for a while, then shut it down - thats how I would want it. Thank you for sharing something very relaxant to the topic.

As you have already realised, the social media sites will remain indefinitely. This would not really matter because it would rapidly become inactive and simply be ignored. I doubt whether closing the accounts would make any significant difference because in most cases the data will live on regardless.

@Inlemay There is one very reliable solution to this quandary, just live forever.

facebook keeps revealing memories from the past, which some days can be quite upsetting especially if one was very close to the person - anyway, I have unfollwed my deceased friends - as they are not anywhere near to read the jargon I write.

I'm so sorry about your friend, I know you were a big help to him when his leg was amputated. It's a sad fact that the longer we live the more of our friends will die. I've asked my daughter to sort things out online for me when I go.

that is a good idea. I am ok with mine staying open for a period, maybe a year. for friends to get the photos they want,. and to leave comfort for each other, then it needs taken down

Maybe I have to make a list of all sites that I am a member, my usernames and passwords for my children to open when I'm gone. (Knock on woods three times).

So sorry to hear about your friend. Even when it's expected, it's a nasty shock. I haven't done anything about media things - I'm not big on FB, anyway.
