Mailing Bills

I have two bills that I physically must write checks for and mail them. I suppose that I could put them on the credit cards, but still would have to mail them. I do not like putting them in my personal mail box, so this morning as I go to the garden I will go to the post office. Do you still mail bills? How do you feel about putting them in your personal mail box? My reluctance comes from the fact that even though I was in a town, I had people remove things from my mailbox. Here in this smaller town, my mailbox is on the street and is across the street. There are highways near by and people passing through. It feels vulnerable. I am glad my town is still a large enough town to have a mailbox.

I pay most of the bills online and some by direct debit on our bank account.

Hubby has two he pays in person. We could probably pay them online or by phone. I have two that I cannot do either of those ways. They must be a written check and taken in in person or mailed. It costs extra to do anything else.

@GardenGerty It's so good to be able to pay everything online without extra costs for stamps.

I am old school, I write out checks every month for the bills, electric, cable and so on. I take them to the post office as I do other errands, so that I do not do a special trip. I live on a state highway and there is no way I am putting bills in my mail box to go out.

Yes, we have been here less than a year. When I go out of town I go to the post office and stop the mail as I can see three highways from here, as we are at a highway junction. My mail box is on a post across the street. The post master is happy with the idea of us stopping mail.

So no more monthly payments for you? Or just none to mail?

I do not pay my bills in this way. We do everything by direct debit, and we will definitely check that the amount is correctly debited. I think that saves a lot of time.

I will make some payments by debit online. Some are on a regular recurring charge, but I have had the experience that from time to time they do not wait to take it until the payment is due.

@GardenGerty I tend to make advance payment if the direct debit is not worth setting up. I have a few insurance policies with annual premium. The premium is due on every September of the year. I paid it off by July, way before the payment is due. This prevents me from spending the money away!

Yes I would feel vulnerable too as the mail also sucks here..it takes forever and that is if someone doesnt get to it first Heather. No I pay all bills online for that reason.

Everything we can pay online we do. Two or three get paid in person. These two must be mailed.

We never have personal mailboxes on the street. The mailman puts any letters he delivers to us directly into our letter box in our door, and any we post we put in a proper postbox. So no mail is ever left where anyone else can get at it.

I have a couple bills I have to pay by check. I just put them out in our mail box and it goes out fine. Is there anyway you can take your bills to a post office and send them off from there?

I pay all of our bills by tele-banking. I have all of our accounts registered with the bank, so I just pick up the phone, usually when I am still in my nightshirt, and pay what needs to be paid that week. I haven't mailed out a cheque to cover a bill in years. We don't have a mailbox right at our home, we have to do down to the post office, we have a box down there and would send out any mail from there as well.

Most of our bills we do online. These two for me cannot be done that way. Neither one of them will be very long term. Oh, and our local trash/water bill has to be paid at the city office in town. It is by the post office.

We have some of the old blue mailboxes here. And-yes, we do have a bill that has to be paid by mail. Strange-hope everyone changes to online!

Yes many of ours are online, or direct debit. Just this one or two have not got that option.

My rent has to be paid by check and mailed every month. It is SO ridiculous! I had to order checks when I moved here just to pay my rent. But if it's what they insist upon, it's what I do. Thankfully, we have our own mailbox right off the lobby of our building.

In general, if I'm mailing stuff with personal information, I don't leave it in the mailbox for any longer than it has to be. If I'm running errands anyway, I just take it to the post office. Just cuz.

That is exactly right. You hear a lot about sneaky people getting in the mail.

@GardenGerty And the people who are the most likely victims are elderly and the disabled.

I pay all bills online, because all my bills are Emails (Electronic mails). You can request that they sent your bills electronically instead of post mail, tell them your reason, am sure they'll understand.

Nope, these two and one downtown for water and trash have no way to pay except by check or credit card, through the mail or in person or in a drop box.

@GardenGerty Okay, but they need to do something about it. I wish you well in coping with it though.

no I see your point. ours is out front near the street next to the side walk so anyone could open it, grab and just keep walking.

Its getting harder and harder to find a mailbox in my town. Our garbage service finally caved and started allowing us customers to pay on line. That's it for checks except for the lady who works on our burro's hooves. She gets a check.
