Movie Review: "Star Trek Beyond"

Yesterday was a power saver day in California, which means you’re supposed to use less energy, particularly between 2 and 6. Anymore, anytime the mercury rises over 90, one is supposed to go easy on the air conditioner. I look upon it as an obedience test. But that’s neither here nor there. My husband and I decided to go see a matinee. We saw Star Trek Beyond. We splurged and went for 3-D IMAX. The air conditioning was fantastic but the audience sparse. I can’t help but wonder if it wasn’t because, despite the fantastic special effects and the repeated—almost routine—death-defying escapes, this story has been told before. Roughly half-way through his five-year mission, Captain James T. Kirk is bored. After a humiliating ambassadorial stop on one planet, the ship puts in for maintenance work at a Space Station Yorktown on the edge of Federation Space. (Nor sure of the significance of the name. There have been numerous ships named Yorktown and, of course, I vaguely recall someone surrendering to George Washington a while back at Yorktown…) The visuals on the space station are quite nice, almost overwhelming. Dr. McCoy refers to it as “a snow globe.” An alien vessel approaches in obvious distress. The single occupant is told she’s not authorized to enter and to back away. She tells of being the sole escapee of a scientific expedition in the nebula and requests a rescue ship. Whaddya know, the Enterprise is the ship best equipped for such a mission. Into the nebula and beyond she goes. The Enterprise makes it through the nebula almost without a scratch and is immediately attacked. What could this alien people want? The ship’s weapons are useless against them. Well, this is a pickle, isn’t it? While the movie was entertaining, I couldn’t quite buy into it. Hull breaches in space don’t result in depressurization. In one scene, Scottie climbs out of his escape pod on the edge of a cliff. He slips and is left hanging over the precipice by his fingertips. The scene cuts away to some other part of the story. The next the viewer sees of Scotty, he’s walking along a trail, no worse for wear. So, yeah, it’s fun, but not to be taken too seriously. At the very end come two appropriate dedications: In loving memory of Leonard Nimoy. For Anton. Captain Kirk: Chris Pine Commander Spock: Zachary Quinto Lt. Commander Leonard McCoy: Karl Urban Lt. Nyota Uhura: Zoe Saldana Lt. Commander Montgomery Scott: Simon Pegg Lt. Hikaru Sulu: John Cho

Wait. So they want you to cut back on your air conditioner when it gets hot? Isn't that the whole point of having one...to stay cool? I am so glad I'm not in CA! They're sounding more and more like Big Brother. Hubby and I have been watching the Enterprise with Scott Bakula, on Netflix. It's better than I thought it'd be. We saw the first Star Trek movie, with Chris Pine. It was okay. I think I prefer the t.v. shows.

It's not too draconian—they say turn it up to 78 during the cut back hours. Also, we've signed an agreement that will let them turn it off for period of time—say, 15 minutes or so every hour I'm not really sure how long it is. They result is, our electric bill for the two of us is usually less than $50/month and rarely gets above $65. But yes, it is sounding like Big Brother. The drain on the power grid is high during the heat waves simply because there are a lot of people in the area. The movies are becoming Pablum with BOOMs and pretty pictures. I prefer things with a little thought. They're not horrible. I don't wish to give that impression.

@Genipher That comes with its own problems.

@msiduri It seems your area would do well with solar power. Then you could keep the air conditioner running for pretty cheap...

I haven't been to the movies in ages. I watched the original Star Trek shows and I might just have to break down and go see this movie. Thank you for the review.

It was a great movie, I enjoyed it a lot. I however have to wait for it to come out on blueray since no one in my family is a trek fan. Son in law is a Star Wars fan so I get to see those movies.

I was a big fan of the original Star Trek. I watched some of Star Trek the next Generation and it was good. I have not watched any of these newer movies with the new actors portraying the classic characters. I would like to watch one of the movies but I am in no great hurry to watch one.

They are not without merit. Given there are a few more BOOMs then the original shows had, of course.

There comes a point when special effects etc are more prominent than story. The series was known for thoughtful stories.

Yes. I think people expect the over the top effects. There is some thought put into the story—why does the villain have such a bee in his bonnet? I suppose I betray nothing when I saw he's eventually hoist by his own petard. But there's no further reflection on this.
