Don't Smile - This is Serious!

I've written a lot about photo frames lately and it brought to mind a story but I couldn't find the photo I needed to illustrate my tale. Today I found that photo so here's the story to go with it. We picked up two lovely ornate frames at a market once but never ever used them. When a good friend turned 60, we knew she'd been looking for some fancy frames so we decided to give ours to her. One had a quite sombre picture of a girl – something that might have been painted by one of the Dutch masters. The other didn't have a picture at all. We decided to put a 'ancestor' type photo in the frame. All our photos of ancestors shows them very formal and serious so we set up the tripod, donned hats and you can see the result. Our friend was delighted with the frames but for the moment they hang in the passageway complete with the same pictures. Not quite what we expected.

Very sober looking picture. How hard was it for you not to smile in that picture?

@JudyEv I can imagine it wasn't. It almost looks like you're about to take someone to task for some very bad behavior. Very convincing disapproving expressions.

The colors are too bright for an old time photo, a black and white photo would have looked more 'aged'.

@JudyEv I remember that some old portraits of my grandparents were painted by hand, but the colors are very light, never bright.

@LadyDuck I did some casual work in a photo studio once and the lady used to hand-tint the photos.

@crazyhorseladycx The frames we've been making are very, very plain compared to some but I like ours - and they'll be easier to dust! Not that they'll be subjected to that too often. :)

At least your ancestor pictures are formal like that. In our family archive is a picture of most of my aunts, uncles, grandparents, great grandparents and maybe even great great grandparents both sides hand milking a Holstein.

@JudyEv There are a lot of formal posed pictures but there are specific shots of each person milking a cow. There are quite a few other farming photos as well. Some of them will have interest from museums because they go all the way back to the turn of the last century.

@koopharper So individual shots. I didn't pick that up. Farming shots are interesting I think as so much has changed. We have some very old photos of bullock teams dam-sinking.

I wonder why they did it like that? Maybe one lot had to leave and the milking couldn't wait. Our whole farm life revolved around milking times mostly.

We gave our friend two frames but only one had a picture in it so we made up this one to put in the second frame rather than give her a frame with nothing in it.
