I have mentioned many times how I am always winning books... can't seem to win anything BUT books. I got one in the mail last week that I didn't even know I won, or I forgot I won it. LOL! And the idea for winning books is that you read them and post a review. Writing the review on Amazon is desired most. Yesterday I received a surprise. A complete stranger posted on my Twitter feed asking if I would read her book and give her some feedback. I tweeted back that I was willing but that I only read hard copies, not e-books (because I was expecting an electronic copy). She said no problem, private messaged me and I gave her my email address. I have no idea who this person is or where she heard from me, perhaps through Goodreads, I don't know. But I think of it as a compliment that someone has asked me to personally review their book.

I go on various book review sites and to be honest I am not impressed. I buy all my books digitally and apart from authors I know I used to rely on reviews. Now it's so easy to write a book and sell it digitally I've found the standard of writing has drastically dropped. Many of these "authors" are members of writing groups and their friends seem to get on review sites and push up the ratings. There are some seriously crap books out there now that'd never get published the old way. I now go by professional reviews only and if I see a book where the reviews mainly come from good reads I generally ignore them unless there is a sample available.

I have friends who have been published and read their books and given reviews but I only give honest reviews. I have always refused to lie in all areas of my life (well, almost all). But you are right in that it seems anyone can get a book published now if they have the means to do so.
