Why does evil exist?

Why is there evil (bad, wickedness) in the world? Many have a hard time figuring out the answer to this question. Have you figured it out? Is it because God doesn't exist? That seems to be the conclusion of some. I say some because there are many more believers in God than non-believers. How do you answer that question? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Photo credit: 1hopefulman

The 4 best scriptures in the Bible that I like that best describes my answer to your great question is: Ecclesiastes 8:9, Deuteronomy 32:4,5; and Revelation 12:9, and 1st John 5:19

Ecclesiastes 8:9 Evil exists because some that are in power are evil and promote it? Deuteronomy 32:4,5 Evil exists because some or many choose to do evil things. Revelation 12:9; 1 John 5:19 Evil exists because Satan who chose to do evil promotes it. Did I get it right?

@itslikethistome So, how do you answer those that ask why God doesn't do something since He is all powerful?

I am guessing it exists to balance the good days.

If that is the case, should we be happy and thankful when bad things happen? Is God in your understanding of things?

The first two humans and many of their children chose the bad way, so God let them go their way and now we see the results. A great thing is that many have chosen, and still are choosing God's will and they will be rewarded for that with everlasting life, either in heaven or on earth... The Bible has the answer..

So, we can choose to do good or bad. Does evil exist because some or many choose to do evil and God is allowing evil to continue for a period of time?

@1hopefulman Yes, he allows the evil only a limited time, so that we can see the results of it - but he will soon remove it, when it is proven beyond doubt, what it leads to. Then he doesn't need to allow the evil any more..

As long as there are people on Earth there will be good and evil. Satan will try to spread evil all over the Earth. So it is up the good people to spread the love of God around the world.

I find this scripture interesting and encouraging! 2 Peter 3:13 (New International Version) 13 But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells.

This is a question that will take a lifetime to answer. I believe God made us for a purpose but he wanted us to be free to choose. Without the existence and presence of evil, we wouldn't really have a choice. I'm sure God was capable of creating robots to do his will but they would not be choosing him or his way of life. They would be just doing it. He didn't do that. I believe the time is coming when God will have had enough of the evil in the world, take over and make everything right.

Yes, God made us with "free will" and many of us use this "free will" to do bad instead of good. I have reached the same conclusion: "I believe the time is coming when God will have had enough of the evil in the world, take over and make everything right."

So there are two groups. Angels promote good and demons promote evil and we have a choice as to which group we follow. Is that how you see it?

Evil is a matter of perspective. God might be evil.

If evil is a matter of perspective, so then evil might not be evil but might actually be good? Why do you think that God might be evil?

@1hopefulman Because of the way the bible is writing. God sounds like the final boss in the end of a game that the hero is trying to take down. After all, how many millions has he killed compared to Satan's 10 people? And several of those were under his orders. Shouldn't the bad guy be the one slaughtering others and laughing about it? That's why it makes sense to think that the good guy was already beaten and the bad guy wrote a book about why he shouldn't be messed with, and tells everyone to bow to him and him alone. Just sounds the perfect part of an evil guy.

I think due to being given free will by God, humans do what they do, and pay for it later if evil deeds are done.

So, is evil the result of having free wlll or the result of us misusing free will?

@1hopefulman Of course, misusing free will. Free will can be acted out in a wide variety of ways.

Do you think good people need bad to be kept on their toes? Is good not "good enough" in itself without bad?

@1hopefulman Even the good cannot remain united as ego and selfishness rise to the fore. All through history some are painted as bad for wars - not that the victors were good. He who has not sinned cast the first stone - comes to mind. Those who are having the most vicious weapons point out at others as the villains. So I feel the jury is still out as to the good and the bad - siva

God gave us a choice and many of us are using it to do evil. But soon he will call for an accounting and get rid of evildoers.

Yes, it would seem that we have evil because of "free will" and that Satan and Adam and Eve chose evil over good and it is God that decides what is good and what is evil.

You wouldn't be able to recognise the good if the bad didn't exist.

Does it work this way? In our mind we have to understand good and bad, what is good and what is evil. But do we have to do something evil in order to know that it is evil?
