Jabo suggested I write something about my father who served in the Solomon Islands during World War 11. He went in the navy just before the war was over. I was very young at the time, but I remember some of the things he told us.
Although he didn't talk much about his experiences, what he said stuck in my mind. The sailors dug foxholes because the Japanese climbed the trees where the sailors couldn't see them and shot the sailors in camp. When the Japanese started shooting the guys would dive for a fox hole, but after hours and hours they would have to come out to get food and drink. I could just imagine the horror of it and how hungry and thirsty the sailors must have been to come out to be shot.
But the sailors would come out and those who weren't killed would go after the Japanese and kill them. War is so horrible. I wish we could get to the point where we would have no more war. Sending our young men and women to fight and be killed is the most horrible thing in the world.

Like you state here, war in horrible. Many of us have stories and experiences stuck in our heads that should serve to stop future wars-but it has not worked so far.

The Japanese were known to be so brave and daring during that time. They also occupied the Philippines during WWII.
