Solomon Islands

Jabo suggested I write something about my father who served in the Solomon Islands during World War 11. He went in the navy just before the war was over. I was very young at the time, but I remember some of the things he told us. Although he didn't talk much about his experiences, what he said stuck in my mind. The sailors dug foxholes because the Japanese climbed the trees where the sailors couldn't see them and shot the sailors in camp. When the Japanese started shooting the guys would dive for a fox hole, but after hours and hours they would have to come out to get food and drink. I could just imagine the horror of it and how hungry and thirsty the sailors must have been to come out to be shot. But the sailors would come out and those who weren't killed would go after the Japanese and kill them. War is so horrible. I wish we could get to the point where we would have no more war. Sending our young men and women to fight and be killed is the most horrible thing in the world.

War is so scary and although sometimes it's a necessary evil I wish there were a more civilized way to solve conflicts.

So do I, and if countries would try to work together, we should be able to compromise and work out the difficulties.

I agree, all the wars are horrible and I cannot understand why the politicians are always so quick to send young men and women to fight.

Like you state here, war in horrible. Many of us have stories and experiences stuck in our heads that should serve to stop future wars-but it has not worked so far.

It's a hard world, I've often said let the politicians go work it out or fight it out. Of course we wouldn't have any politicians if that were the case.

The saddest thing in the world to have to send your child where he or she is likely to be killed.

The "principle of continuity" leads me to think that war will never end.

You are probably right. Wars have been with us since the beginning of time and I can't see that we've grown wiser.

It would be nice if war would cease. That must have been horrific for him.

I'm sure it was, and to all the young men and women who go off to war.

How interesting Ruby, thanks for telling us this. That must have been horrendous waiting in those foxholes knowing that they were likely to get shot when they came out.

That's true, It looks like people would learn that we don't all have to think alike. We should be able to live with our differences.

The Japanese were known to be so brave and daring during that time. They also occupied the Philippines during WWII.
