Scar is out trying to catch crawdads again (also called crayfish or crawfish, sometimes fresh water lobsters). He's spent quite a bit of time patiently staring at a hole one has made, and suddenly today he starting reaching in trying to get it. Here he has his entire front leg almost to his shoulder reaching down in the hole. I keep telling him something is gonna grab back someday, but he won't listen. For those unfamiliar with the term, I've included a photo of what he is trying to catch...

He'd best be careful or he might end up as 'Scar-face'!

I imagine he will get a pinch or maybe even two. These always scared me, I am such a scaredy cat. I worked as an aid in a classroom once where the teacher ordered crawdads to observe for science. (No disections, no harm, these were third graders) at the end of the school year they were released in a stream near her home. We did not invite cats to participate, though.

I used to catch them from a creek near the house to use for fish bait.

He'll certainly yowl and come running for Dad when he does catch one! I thought those things only lived in water. What are they doing making holes in your yard? Are they any good to eat (when cooked, of course)?

They are a Cajun specialty from what I have heard. They make deep tunnels anywhere near an area that water stands frequently, runoff from the roof leaves water standing in that area quite a bit.

@JolietJake We have native crayfish in our rivers which are quite small (but supposed to be edible, though muddy tasting). They are now an endangered species, however, because they are being ousted by the larger and fiercer Japanese crayfish. Here, you need a licence to catch either species. Apparently, the way to catch them is at night with a bag of chopped liver. They just grab onto it and you haul 'em in! You can buy crayfish tails in many supermarkets here but they are a sea-going species. I don't see a lot of difference between those and King Prawns or Jumbo Prawns, except in price. If you're going to smother them in Cajun spices, they'll taste good whatever they are!

I think he got nipped by one a little bit ago, he jerked his paw out real quick and sat there for a moment holding it up

Scar might catch one if he keeps fishing. Or me might get a whisker pinched off. Silly kitty.

I know people have said this, but I hope he doesn't get pinched... Also I didn't know they were also called "Crawdads," nor did I know that "Crayfish," and "Crawfish," were interchangeable.

When I was a kid we always caught crawdads in the creek with paper cups that had held our SnoCones. Good memories!
