Pet Harness For The Car...Need Help

I have been looking online for pet harnesses for the car for our two dogs. It's such a hassle to have to take out the kennels and put them in the car every time we want to take the dogs for a drive. If it will be a long drive, then the kennels are best of course but just for a few hours is just a pain. There are a lot of different car harnesses for dogs online and after looking at them, I am more confused than I was at first. I'm not sure which one to get. My little furbabies are important to me so I want to make sure they are safe. Have your or someone you know ever bought a car harness for their dog? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I've never heard of dog harnesses, I hope you find something suitable.

I had not heard of them either until recently. It would be a lot better option than having to take their crates with us.

I never have no, but it does seem like a good idea.

I think so too. The one in the picture looks like it keeps them pretty tight to the belt and secure.

I always wear seat belts when I'm in a car. Back when I was married to a dog, though, she vehemently refused to wear seat belts. She wanted to be able to stick her head out the window and smell all the livestock we passed on our country drives. Of course she was a big Siberian Husky and there weren't any seat belt devices back then big enough for her. When you put a harness on a husky they automatically think it's time to pull a sled. If I ever ran out of gas I could have harnessed her up to the front of the car and she would have pulled us home. I sure miss her.

Me too @MKAlubs ; only I had a 150 lb Akita. He took up the entire back seat from door to door and his head rubbed the ceiling. If he didn't have his head out of one of the windows, he would try standing on the center console to make sure I was driving correctly.

I can certainly understand not being able to restrain a Husky. I think Huskies are such beautiful dogs.

We strap ours in with the seat belts and their retractable leashes.

How do you strap their leashes to the seat belt? If that would work, I could do it and save some money.

No, I have never seen dog harness here, I think it's mandatory to put them in the kennels.

There isn't any kind of law here regarding pets in cars. I'm just trying to find the safest way where they will be comfortable too.

@simone10 I have no idea if the harness can be comfortable, in my opinion it can be dangerous.

@LadyDuck Why do you think it would be dangerous? I'm wanting to know anyone's opinion so I can make a wise choice.

I never knew they made such a thing! I get so nervous seeing cars go down the street with dogs hanging out the window. I am so fearful of them falling out the window.

I also hate to see a dog hanging out the window. I have even seen dogs loose in the back of a pickup truck.

@simone10 me too in trucks back. I even saw one time where one jumped out and got hit. stupid woman was running around crying about it after because she had been the one driving around with it like that. then once I saw an abuser dragging a puppy behind his truck down the road and my husband at the time got out of the car after forcing him to stop and was going to kick butt. the guy just let it loose and we took it home. lol. been years ago

@bunnybon7 How awful regarding both stories! I would have done what I could to stop the abuser also. How can someone be so cruel?

I've never heard of a booster seat for a dog...lol. I guess it's not any stranger than a harness for the car. I just want my babies as safe as they can be and if this works and they can be out of the crate, I am all for it.

@simone10 'tis a great idea to've 'em secured when they're travelin' with ya, e'en jest to the drive 'p bank window. sadly when a wreck occurs, they're prone to becomin' lil projectile missiles causin' great harm not jest to 'emselves but the humans 's well.

@crazyhorseladycx Yes, they don't much much protection if we were in a wreck. Not only is there a risk that they could be hurt but they could also get out of the car and get lost.

Afraid I can't help being owned by only a cat, but I am sure there are other dog owners here that can help you out.

Yeah, I don't think Scar would appreciate being put in a harness.

@simone10 He lets me put a lead on him, but he would seriously claw me up over a harness

@JolietJake That's great that you can put a lead on him. A lot of cats wouldn't let you do that.

We have never purchased car harnesses for the dogs we have had over the years. I suppose I would look for one that looks to be the most comfortable. Reading the reviews may help in your choice.

Yes, I will definitely read the reviews. Some of the ones I have viewed have a little more room for them to move around but I don't know if that is a good thing if we were ever in a wreck.

Our dogs just ride loose in the back seat, they sleep and enjoy the ride.

Ours do that too if we aren't going very far. I am just scared of what would happen if we were in an accident. They could get hurt or get loose and run away.

@BelleStarr Maybe the best thing for me is just to continue putting them in a kennel. It might offer the best protection. We only use the kennel if we are going to travel for a while.

What kind of car harness did you buy for Coco? Do you like it? There are so many online that I'm confused on which ones are good.

@simone10 actually I bought it just for walks and such. found it at petsmart. bought 2 and the pink one wore out. I like harnesses that don't choke a dog etc. been trying to figure what I can do if this one wears out. I sewed it once already

@bunnybon7 Oh, I thought you were referring to the harnesses for cars. I also have harnesses for both of my dogs because 1) Bella has wiggled out of her collar before and 2) I don't want to choke them.

No. It would be a great idea to buy one for our pitbulls at home.

I am trying to think of the safety of our dogs and also their comfort. I am hoping to find some that work so we don't always have to carry their kennels with us.

I'm not one that buys online, I rather go to a STORE to LOOK at what I'm buying just to be SURE that's what I want & not waste my money or time if it's not. maybe if you have a pet store you'd be safer going that way, where you can see what your looking at & asking questions about what your looking at.

Before buying anything, we probably will go look in a pet store first. Sometimes it's cheaper to buy online.
