Hello Friends Just recently I was in this mess. I am programmer by myself. One of relative was in need of website so he told me about it, and he also tells me that I can charge anything what I am charging to others. That sounds okay, so I did it. Well, I did all purchasing domain name and hosting by my self with my payment. But after I finished my work, he was asking for time after website got online. May be he was in some trouble or what? But in the end he paid me whole money. But I have to wait for a month. But in that whole month my mind was playing with me that either I should ask him money or not, as of course he is my relative. In other case we always used to take money in advance. (some part of). But here there was other case. Have you in such situation anytime?! I mean where because of relationship you can't ask for money even you are need.

It depends of the amount of time and money invested. Most of the time I do not take money from relatives/good friends... but I expect that they will respond "present" when I will ask them a service.

Well,if work is small and normal then even I would not expect anything. But it was a big project. That's why. And yes I gave lots of my extra time on it. So I have to. But it wasn't easy at all.

@akp100 If it was a big project, it is normal to ask him to pay. You have done nothing wrong, your payment was justified.

@topffer Yes, that's why. And I did it indirectly too. I was feeling too hesitating for the same thing. I knew that I will get paid by him later on, but as I paid for him already I was in bit hurry. But never mind he did pay me after one month delay. So its okay.

Yeah, I remember when I used to be a math tutor and I was a bit sceptical when a very good friend asked me to tutor her son. Since they're like family to us, I didn't really feel right to charge her - on the other hand, I didn't feel right to give my time and service for free either. But all's well that ends well - she was very understanding about my feelings.

That's cool if person is understanding. Even in my case he was quite understanding, yes little delayed happened but he paid for my work. As project was bit big, and I spend lot time for that, that's why I was expecting money too.

I'm not close with relatives. I don't render legal services for free. Even my siblings and parents have to pay every legal document they ask me to do and I demand payment for it.

I never asked for money, nor has anyone borrowed any. I would gift it to my children in a heartbeat if they ever needed any. Friends can be lost over money. So can family.

Well, it wasn't borrowed money. He told me to make one thing and he told me to say the charge for the same. And yes it was big project for his business that's why I have to ask him for it. Otherwise for normal thing I won't go for the same too.

If I'm not planning to gift something, I expect to be paid. I can be more patient, of course, but what is due must be paid. Then it depends on the relative, I don't feel like I have strong relationships with most of them. I'm also a young girl, so I can't be exploited. I may ask to someone who is close to this person, instead of asking in a direct way, if I don't have enough confidence. I'll still ask anyway.

Even I had to choose indirect way as you said in last line. Well, even I would not have mind if work is normal. But I had give lots of my extra time on it. And it was big project too. So I have to. That person has done some delay but paid me after all. So nothing much.

I think it all depends on the circumstances of people.

That's true. But when it is from relatives then I think it is hard for me at least.
