Favorite One-Off Bands #4 - Sex Pistols

#4 in my Favorite One-Off Band's series belongs to the legendary, infamous London punk band The Sex Pistols. Managed by fashion entrepreneur Malcolm McLaren, vocalist Johnny Rotten, guitarist Steve Jones, bassist Glen Matlock (Matlock would be replaced by Sid Vicious,) and drummer Paul Cook formed The Sex Pistols in 1975. The Pistols (all five members) are in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and are as widely known for their massive influence (Joy Division and the Buzzcocks are just two of the bands that formed immediately after members saw Sex Pistols in concert,)as much as their legendary antics. Their one album, 1977's Never Mind the Bullocks, Here's the Sex Pistols, is a classic, a Gold record that Rolling Stone once declared the "big bomb in the music wars of the 70's." The while the album only reached #106 on the Billboard 200, it hit #1in the UK. (Fun Fact I learned long ago in a Steve Jones interview: Jones played bass on all but two songs on the album. Sid Vicious played on "Bodies," and Glen Matlock played on "Anarchy in the UK.") They were rude, they were outrageous, they swore on live television. However, you can't deny the long shadow the Sex Pistols cast over rock music.
the sex pistols pretty vacant

I was working in London when all this was going on. I think it was The Stranglers playing at the local University, with admission 10 pence, that introduced me to punk

I bought this as a 17 year-old as soon as it was released in a blaze of publicity. I have to admit that the 4 hit singles on it were the only tracks I found playable more than once! The Stranglers, now they were another matter...

@teamfreak16 They certainly are but not in quite the same form. Hugh Cornwell left in 1990 and has released numerous solo albums, written books and acted. The remaining three have used various other guitarists and singers and continue to record and tour (they have had some lower chart placings in the UK since Cornwell's departure). I believe it was a pretty acrimonious split.

The Stranglers were great. I'm not even sure if they are still around.

I like them and did kind of put the music on the map. For some reason not my favorite punk bands. Their personal problems aside, it did seem to effect their music at some point. Just seems like the band could have been much more, but then again maybe that is the reason they are as famous as they are. I guess life would be boring if it was all sunshine and happy endings.

They were pretty much doomed once they brought Sid on board, I think.

If you don't like punk rock, you wouldn't like them.
