Unfortunately I woke up with a sore throat this morning. I also found out a little bit ago that I have been released for surgery by all my doctors. What to do, what to do. I am afraid if I tell them about my sore throat they will move the surgery date. If they do that I will have to take all of my tests over again. Why? Because you have to have your tests done within thirty days before the surgery. Does anyone know a good cure for a sore throat?

Warm water, not hot because you have to be able to drink it .Add ½ tsp of salt and a little less then a ½ tsp of baking soda, stir well. Pour some of the liquid down your throat, let it sit for a moment, then gargle. Do this twice in a row 3 times daily. It does work.

Rest, avoid sweet and salty foods and cold drinks then I gargle water with salt (as suggested by others who responded) or gargle with something that has antiseptic like listerine. Also avoid sudden change in temperature like going in and out from an aircon room or car.

@HazySue western medicine teaches that it is caused by strep and pathogens and they are right but all of us have some as normal flora or are exposed to it. Oriental med teaches that it's a symptom of over worked organs from bad food, so it's good to combine both schools of thinking. Yes sudden change of temperature is bad for us, I once ignored this when I had mild sore throat and I lost my voice for days. I forgot fatty foods is also bad.

@louievill I didn't know about the avoiding of sweet and salty foods. I was wondering if the change in temps between air conditioning and the hot air outside had anything to do with it.

@louievill thank you for sharing your knowledge with me. I will follow what you suggest. I do believe, as do you, that it is good to take into account both schools of thinking.

Hopefully it's short lived. Not long ago I had a day with a horrible sore throat. I thought I had strep....but when I woke up the next morning it was just gone.

A cure my grandmother taught me is salt water gargle. The hotter and saltier you make it the better. Good luck.

@HazySue .....Not sure. Just know it does help a sore throat. Soda is good for the teeth/gums I think.

I'm sorry, I am praying that your throat feels better soon so you can get the surgery done. Sometimes our bodies choose the WORST times to get sick!

I had a little bit of one and am just sucking on lozenges, BUT you don't know what your sore throat is from so that's only something temporary. You're right, they'll delay surgery if there's the slightest thing going on. That sucks. It's so hard to get things planned out in the first place. My son and I both had surgery dates moved around, always a pain. Wasn't us either, it was the surgeons.

When is your surgery? A sore throat should heal in the matter of a few days. Gargle with warm salt water, 1 cup or war water and 1/2 teaspoon of salt. You can also try 1 cup of warm water with 1 tablespoon of Apple Cider vinegar and 1 tablespoon of honey. Good luck.

Oh dear - what should be a minor inconvenience could easily become a big problem for you. I hope it doesn't develop into anything worse, and that you are able to get rid of it before your surgery date.

Do not drink cold drinks, drink lukewarm water after meal.Use herbal way, boil few at least 8 leaves of guava ,let it cool and then gargle it 3 times a day. That is what we are doing at home whenever there is sore throat. This is the advise of my sister, a nurse.

@cacay1 I never heard of boiling guava leaves and gargling. We have a guava tree in our yard. I will try it. Thank you and thank your sister.

Yep. I just had one too. Ginger juice and honey in equal potions. Cured in 3 days. More ginger is better if you can take it.
