Do You Have To Pay Sales Tax on Purchases Where You Live?

United States

Many stores right now are offering school supplies and school clothes for sale, without paying sales tax here in my area, this week. Do you have to pay sales tax where you live? The small town that I live near, has a VERY high rate of sales tax, so a lot of people will NOT shop in this town. It makes no sense to me. If the town LOWERED the sales tax, more people would be willing to shop there and so more revenue would be generated, but because the sales tax rate is so high, even residents will go somewhere else to shop. There are so many taxes anymore, it’s rather ridiculous. Income tax, property tax, sales tax, just to name a few. I found out recently that the state of West Virginia was the first state to implement a sales tax and that was in 1921. I was born in West Virginia and I didn’t know that fact until recently. I wonder about other countries. Do they have a sales tax?

@IreneVincent Value added tax. It's on professional services or any transaction.

@skysnap Just one more thing for which you can be taxed. This is the first time I've heard of it.

Yes we pay sales tax here. It is 15% on everything you buy except for food at the grocery store, except junk food you have to pay tax on that.

15% is a high rate, I think. Sales tax here in Virginia is 5.3% except in some small towns, like the one near me, who are allowed to charge more than the standard rate for some reason.

@Happy2BeMe Well at least you don't have to pay it on food. We do.

@IreneVincent Yes that'd be nice if we had that tax rate! In other parts of CA, tax is a little higher

I guess Virginia sales tax is low (5.3%) compared to others I've heard so far.
