Confessions of a Cheater

I have a confession to make. I've been cheating on y'all. For the past week or so I've been frequenting another site. You can blame it all on @koopharper...he's the one who led me astray. It wasn't long before I became addicted to the site. So... ...I've been writing there. Phew! I feel so much better getting that out! I don't earn money at this "other" site. Well, not real money. They have their own virtual cash and prizes that stay within their boundaries. But I'm not there for the money. I'm there for the contests! I'm there to stretch my brain and get my creative juices flowing. Because my brain needed that. It'd been getting a tad fat and lazy. On a side note, I've discovered that it takes me, roughly, two to three hours to write a 300 word story. If I'm lucky. At that rate, I'll be able to get the rough draft of a novel written in 4,167 hours or around 173 days (I can math! ). And that's if I don't eat, sleep, use the bathroom, or interact with another living soul. I have a better inkling, now, as to why it takes a real author so long to write a book!

Every now and again I hear rumors that the writers here visit other sites. I used to be appalled...but I think I now understand.

The main thing is you are writing. I always thought that was worthwhile pursuit. What is your novel about?

@Genipher Drafting is one thing but rewrites can be very ongoing and then we need time to think about it and come back I guess.

I started an allegory of Esther, set in modern times. But I haven't worked on it for a few years. Mostly I was just trying to point out that if I DID write a novel, it would take forever to get done!

It is hard to find the time. I've been sort-of slacking here. And with some home chores. When the muse hits, you gotta write...right?

aha! yet 'nother person who's been lured to other places, eh? i fear i've not the energy to do such, lol. i'm glad that'cher gettin' yer creative juices flowin' though, that's always a good thingy :) gigglin' o'er the time ya figure to pen a novel. sometimes such jest 'flows', where's ya can get way more set to print. but, 't does take time to get one written....'n then more time fer that pre-editin' 'for ya send 't off to the editors, lol. quite the process :)

I think I've gotten a little faster these last few days. But I'm still amazed to look up a the clock and see how much time has passed! Good thing hubby is off work for the summer to help with the kiddos. Pretty soon we'll all be back to "regular routine" and I won't be on the computer much at all.

You are not the only cheater here if you really called it cheating. You know as a writer we have to separate our eggs in different baskets. I do write in many sites as well. What is the name of that site you are cheating us?

If you find that it helps you become a better writer and realize at least some of your writing goals, I'm happy to take some of the blame.

I'll have to dedicate a book to you one day, as thanks. That is, if I can actually get one written. And published.

Are adult stories allowed in that site? You know, all the restraints here make me want to "cheat" as well.

@sabtraversa Not sure how far the envelop can be pushed there. I just stay within myself. The system must work pretty good because I haven't stumbled into anything really raunchy by accident.

@responsiveme No, not yet. I've not been here very much, either. I will head over her way in a little while. I'm helping a young man set up his iPhone onto Straight Talk right now and rescuing his data from his old iPhone...

@daddyevil I'm still here a little. Trying to keep up with notifications and the other day I wrote a couple of posts. But between all this writing and (here and elsewhere) and making sure I don't totally ignore the kids all day...I need more hours in the day!!

Do you now? I do eat, sleep, use the bathroom and interact with other people. It only takes me about ten minutes to write 300 words. If that. I could stretch it to half an hour if I had to or the subject was mystifying. Maybe someday you'll finish that novel, but I wonder if we'll be here to read it when it's finished? I wonder, if the rough draft takes 173 days, how long it will take to write the actual novel.

@Genipher Ah, I see the problem. What you need to do, and is recommended by the way, is to set aside a writing time and put a DO NOT DISTURB sign on your door and lock it. Do not come out until you have your daily quota finished. That way you will get that novel written before you turn 173 years old.

Ah, you're a much faster writer than I. It might be that I'm slow because there are constant distractions. One son wants to talk about his latest computer game. I listen and then type a few words. The baby gets hurt so I console him back to a happy mood and type a few words. Oh look! It's lunchtime! Guess I have to feed the kids again sigh. And I'm often looking things up as I go. The question is...will I still be around to finish a novel? This could take me years!

@Genipher You can earn gift points and pay for an upgraded account. I used to maintain my account there without paying a dime. My daughter still does. She currently has enough gift points banked from winning contests and doing review work that she could maintain her account for several years without having to do another thing.

Virtual badges and ribbons. Though I think it's possible to actually buy the badges. And then you could start create your own version of a Cub or Girl Scout vest with writing badges!

@koopharper I didn't know that! Now I'm going to have to hunt down that info and see how much I have to save. Because I'd like to get at least a Basic account...but I'm too cheap to put out for it.
