A New Project on the Go

We have a new project underway. There is an expanse of unadorned brickwork between two small windows that look out from the kitchen. I've always wanted to put something there to break up the wall. This is on the outside. Most of the ornamental things I've seen are quite expensive but we've come up with something now. In the photo you can see a small single-furrow plough. We have had it since I was a kid and I remember harnessing my pet goat to it and trying to plough up part of the chook-yard (chook = chicken). However she wouldn't walk straight and I had to give the idea away. We will treat the metal with a rust remover then paint it. The wooden handle will be replaced and within a week or two (we don't like to hurry these things) it should be hanging on the wall. I'll post another discussion when it is up and looking beautiful.

I don't know what I like better-the actual plow or the story of the girl and the goat that refused to pull the plow for her! Either way it will be a rich piece to display and talk about.

It wasn't rocket science! All she had to do was walk in a straight line and pull a little bit. I was pushing on the other end!

I had a little cart for her and that was no trouble but she didn't like the plough. :)

I had never thought of goats as pets before, and certainly would not have imagined they were trainable!

Nanny would kneel, stand on her hind legs and roll a barrel. She was great fun.

@JudyEv My husband grew up with goats and he has said he would like one but with 7 dogs I thyink the goat would have a rough time. I regret not knowing anything about horses and now you have added goats to my loss.

@41CombedaleRoad I guess you see quite a lot of goats in Greece. If you get one, get one with horns - to keep the dogs in control.

@silvermist It takes a while to get to know people here and sometimes what is written can be taken the wrong way so you have to be a bit careful. But those who know me I hope know that I am a bit sarcastic or trying to be funny rather than being unkind or rude. I do enjoy being on here. Have a great day.

Between us we'll get us done. I might do it while Vin is busy with something else - but if he thinks it's a bit tricky or hard, he gets to do it! I'll probably be allowed to clean the brush though.

@JudyEv - not to mention that whole recycling/reusing and not letting go to waste, as well! Saves money AND the environment. Good job!

I guess we could leave it 'au naturel' but it is rusting to bits - and we'll need to concoct a new handle as the wood is falling to pieces.

@JudyEv Maybe just coat it with some kind of sealant, so you preserve the patina but stop it from rusting away.

I think it will look nice. The space needs something quite large and anything commercial is quite expensive.

You put a smile on my face imagining the scene with you behind the plow and your pet goat dragging you willy-nilly around the yard. Some of the "experiments" I did as a kid can still make my blush.
