Walking with Dragons

The first stop on our Indonesian Cruise was Komodo Island. It has a small settlement of around 2000 people who make a living out of fishing, breeding goats or as craftsmen. We were part of an organised tour which took us around the island and close to the Komodo Dragons habitat. Actually we only saw two one was a baby and the other old and decrepit. Apparently these dragons are cannibals and eat their young and sometimes their eggs. My friend and I were at the end of the line and chatting to one of the guides who offered to carry our bags for us. We thought how kind he was to look after the 'old ladies', until we reached our destination and he wanted a tip. Because there is no need for cash on the island we weren't carrying any money so unfortunately he missed out. After the tour we were taken to Pink Beach and spent time snorkelling and admiring the marine life. It was a lovely end to the day.

That annoys me when people expect a tip. On one of our cruises one of the ship's employees took over the pushing of my husband's wheelchair off the ship to our waiting bus. I was just about to give him a tip when he rudely held his hand out and blatantly said 'tip'. I promptly told him that he would have got a tip if he hadn't asked for it. Anyway, I'm glad you had a nice day and saw some Komodo Dragons, even if they weren't prize specimens.

Do you think they keep you away from the dragons on purpose? I wonder how many goats they lose to dragons? I always feel 'used' when people pretend to be kind but are only setting you up for a tip.

you enjoyed a lot. Here in India ,the facilities are less. Snorkeling is not introduced in all beaches. I think they are yet to. It will be great to watch the sea lives going underwater.

That is some wicked looking brute. Would not want to get close.

A tip should be given voluntarily as a way to show appreciation for a service render. Why has it become compulsory?

I guess if you do a kind deed with a wrong motive, it does not always pay.
