When you pass the age of 40, along with your metabolism slowing to a snails pace and all the hormones start declining, bones become weaker, etc. your biological age starts to speed up and its busy aging faster than your chronological age. For every year that goes by you age up to about 6 months of extra age. So when you turn 42 your body is turning 43.
That is scarey. But don't run out and start doing heavy cardio exercises for that is the worst you can do. It does nothing to slow the aging process down. Instead it breaks down the muscles and the production of those nasty little things called free radicals. They accelerate aging and damage cells. You want to find ways to get those hormones working again. Do some yoga. This works the entire body. And check into metabolic training. The more muscle you activate at the same time the better. For both men and women testosterone is the lean-muscle building hormone. So you need to do exercises that will trigger this in your body. An elevated heart rate and insufficient recovery or tighter resistance and less rest time does the job.

Whether it is good genes or luck or all the vitamins I have taken since I was in my twenties, combined with good nutrition, at 76 (in week or so) I am in great health. I just had my checkup and all systems are still go. I am able to work in a retail setting on my feet for 15 to 20 hours a week. I do count myself very lucky.

You are lucky. I envy you your health. I should have taken better care of my body when I was younger.

It is good to be mindful of it but not dwell on it.

Before jumping into any exercise routine, us old folks need to check with the doc first to make sure we're going in the right direction. What's good for a 20 year old isn't so good for a 70 year old.

That is so true. Many just jump in and think it can't possibly hurt us. WRONG! Pulled tendons, and other things occur and then you don't want to exercise at all. Best to check first.

If you figure that women lose estrogen after that age and the fat cells increase I can see where wear and tear and such can add age to the body.

@celticeagle I would like to see the wear and tear slow down so I can get my girlish figure back again. I hope it's not a lost cause. Aging can be hazardous to your health.

Breathing and respiratory exercises coupled with meditation also help in rejuvenating body muscles and hormonal functioning to a useful extent.
