I love Betty Boop! She's so cute with her little spit curls around her face, her rosebud mouth and squeaky voice. I remember watching her in the cartoons back probably fifty eight years or so ago. Ya, (she's been around a while and so have I.) Betty Boop came into popularity in 1930 and cartoons ran until 1939. She was created by Max Fleischer who was a famed animator of the time. She starred in more than 100 cartoons and there is about 13 hours of her on film. The average length of a cartoon film is about six to eight minutes long, each second of film is comprised of 24 frames. She is the only female cartoon star who is not used for the "foil for a male", being a independent woman who once said "I can do anything a man can do." She has appeared in two comic strips, two network animated musical specials and a radio show. Eleven different women were used in her characterization from 1930 to 2008. A boyfriend, Fearless Fred, was introduced in 1935. The garter she always wore on her left leg was taken off one time early on but due to demand from the public it was brought right back. Popeye danced the hula with Betty Boop in his first appearance in a Betty Boop short entitled 'Popeye the Sailor' A short entitled 'Snow White' was a Betty Boop feature and was done before Disney feature of the same name was produced. It is preserved by the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress. Although her original hair color is black she plays a redhead in "Poor Cinderella" in 1934. Betty Boop fans are called Boopaholics and there are several fan clubs around the country.
