I did Canadian bands recently, so I figured "why stop at Canada, when Germany has a lot of great bands in it's own right. Hence my new series Favorite German Bands. The #9 spot belongs to Uli Jon Roth's Electric Sun. After Ulrich Roth, as he was known then, formed Electric Sun after the extremely talented guitarist left the Scorpions. Electric Son keeps Roth's metal roots intact, while incorporating prog rock into the mix. ( Roth is now a solo artist.) Electric Sun managed just three albums, including the 1979 debut, Earthquake. The title track shows off Roth's considerable guitar skills. It's full of the metal/prog sound that I mentioned earlier. I saw Electric Sun back in the early 80's, at the legendary Denver concert hall, The Rainbow Music Hall, sadly, is now a Walgreen's. Anyway, we lined up at the Rainbow. Other than beer, nobody was partying, rare for a heavy metal concert. Cops were regularly patrolling the week parking lot. The next, we saw Al DiMeola. Everyone was partying, including guys doing cocaine. Because it was a jazz show, not one cop ventured into the parking lot. Ironic, huh? I also remember Roth playing an incredible guitar solo, so good that the bassist stopped playing, becoming a wide-eyed observer. And for the encore, the band played old Scorpions tunes which was a treat. Three albums or not, Electric Sun was a great German band, that deserved more recognition than they got. Enjoy "Earthquake." If you like guitar solos, this should be right up your alley.
