Comedy of Errors all around me

My state and my city really and truly don't know what's going on. As they used to say, the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing. And truly, this is fact all around me. I don't know whether to laugh or cry. First, I received an income tax refund check (way more than a year overdue). It's a sizeable amount and definitely comes in handy. The next day, I received a letter, also from the government, letting me know that they were paying off an income tax amount due the State of RI, where I live. I've been speaking with the State tax department for well over a year now, because they were confused about my taxes and whether or not I owed them money. They finally decided I did, and then we had a tug of war over me being able to pay monthly to pay off the full amount. I had to give them my bottom line - I can either pay installments or nothing at all. They wanted the full amount and, at the time, I had $30 to my name (they wanted WAY more than that). Okay, so now the government has informed me that the State's bill has been paid off by part of my refund. YAY! One more problem to check off, right? Well, not so fast, my friend... Because... The next day I received a letter from the State of RI telling me that they've placed a lien on my home because of the money I owe them. I filed the letter away and I'm waiting to see what's going to happen next. Because... 1. The money has been paid 2. I no longer even own that house (I guess they are about to get a big surprise) Government at its finest! And none of them seem to know where I am. Mail keeps going to the old address. I've changed my address in my voter information, so I'm sure someone will notice at some point. Maybe 2 years down the road? I expect a deluge of mail around that time. lol How's the government on your end? -Claudia- image from pixabay

It will take months (maybe years) for their records to catch up. I have no issues, thankfully.

Years is what I'm expecting and I don't even care. I no longer own the house and my bill is paid off, so they can figure it out. And if they call me in to court, I have all the paperwork to prove that I'm off the hook now. As I said, I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

@CRK109 You might as well laugh and save the tear for something else down the line.

That seems to be the case and it makes me overwhelmingly sad. Beyond that, my Monday is going very well so far! I slept well and I'm getting a lot done. I hope you are also doing well!

We had the purchase of our home held up because of $19.89 that was owed to the tax department. Our lawyer was appalled at the way the government handled this error....paid at the bank....copies of deposit/payment slips faxed hither and yon...what a headache.

Yeah, well that almost makes sense to me today after what I've been going through. There doesn't seem to be any kind of organization connected with these departments any more. And they have the nerve to blame US for financial problems. They need large mirrors.

It is incredible how out of kilter these departments can get. I wonder if they are ever embarrassed by how incompetent they are?

@CRK109 At least it is all keeping you entertained - if not amused. :)

Some of the people who work for these agencies and who genuinely care will often apologize for the mess the agencies make for us. But the majority expect us to just go with the flow. I just sit back and wait for the mail to see what's coming next. lol

Despite paying my local tax by direct payment from the bank, I got a legal summons from the courts for non-payment. Not impressed

Wow, even in your country? I really didn't expect that. The problem is obviously larger than I knew. And we want someone to find an answer? I think it just might be impossible.

I think it is quite normal for one department t have no idea what the others are doing which really does lead to a comedy of errors lol

The government is a prime example of inefficiency. It's sad how much time and money they waste chasing each other's tails.
