And another series comes to an end. #1 in my Favorite "Car" Songs series belongs to Ministry's "Jesus Built My Hotrod." Led by vocalist/guitarist Al Jorgensen, the group's only constant, Ministry formed in 1981 in Chicago, starting out as a synth-pop band before morphing into an industrial metal act. And while I love their industrial stuff, part of me wishes they'd have taken the synth-pop further than one album. I contend that they'd have been as big as Depeche Mode and New Order. But they didn't, choosing loud, aggressive guitars. Such is the case with "Jesus Built My Hotrod." Featuring Butthole Surfers frontman Gibby Haynes on vocals, this thing smokes! From their 1991 album Psalm 69: The Way to Succeed and the Way to Suck Eggs, "Jesus Built My Hotrod" did well, reaching #19 on the Billboard US Alternative chart, and somehow, #34 on that magazine's US Dance chart. According to Wikipedia, Al Jourgensen claims in his autobiography that the song has sold over 1.5 million copies worldwide. As I said, this one smokes. How can it not be #1?
