Coy Dogs and Coyotes

Canada

I live in a small town, with thousands of acres of grapes growing in fields and woods everywhere... Its just like living in the country except I live on a street with homes and paved roads. There are woods behind me, a large government owned protected land with more houses and streets all around that land. Our downtown is one block long... you get the picture? Four times this summer I have been awakened by the sound of coy dogs and coyotes yapping and singing. It doesn't last long and it is loud, they are very close to my home and many other homes on this street. I asked around and others have heard their noise but didn't think it could be coyotes or coy dogs, they quieted too quickly.... Last night around 2 AM I was awakened by the yapping and singing of the animals again. I listened carefully and heard a woman say in a loud whisper “Settle Down” and they did. She must walk her dogs in the middle of the night. I have no idea how many she is walking but hearing their yapping and singing it must be a large number. Now that I know its not a pack of wild dogs. I will get up and look out into the street to see just how many she is walking. She must have a handful of leashes... Have you ever heard the cries of coyotes or coy dogs? When I was a kid in upstate New York, we had a lot of them on our land and in the woods. The photo is a group of photos of my grand-dogs. I had to put the photo of my two Australian Cattle dogs because they like to poop together...
Since I live in the sticks I get coyotes wandering around outside with their pups yelping and howling. And since I have no air conditioning I have no choice ...

I do have coyotes at my place a lot @PainsOnSlate . Sometimes I'll be goofy and step on my back porch and howl like they do.

My daughter lives in the boonies and her dog attacked a coyote in full day light trying to kill one of her chickens. The Chickens and the dog was kept in for the next week.. I laughed , I would echo the howl too....

@msiduri I do have a distinctive voice. People that live 60 acres away know when it's me. They've...um..mentioned it.

That is very inconsiderate of that woman to walk her dogs at that time of night. It wouldn't matter if they weren't noisy, but as it is, I think I'd have a word with her. Cute collage.

We have lived in 4 different places in TN and we've seen coyotes at all of them. The one here was way at the top of our hill.

We don't hear them in town, but when we go camping, we frequently hear them. An eerie sound. One night, a whole pack came into the campground, chasing rabbit or something. It was pretty brutal.

That would be a bit scary. We haven't heard them while we camp in the mountains in NY...at least not yet.

@PainsOnSlate They rarely attack humans. I'm not afraid of them. When people leave food out for them or feed them, trouble starts, though.

@rebelann It was a cold morning and the dogs were let out to relieve themselves, my son standing in the doorway ( barefooted) on a cold snowy morning...that was what he could see without going outside in the snow...

Thanks for the laugh... My son, the owner of those two dogs was proud after he adopted (saved) the 10 year old female to join his much younger male (yes she is fixed) they were not great friends at the beginning and he was proud they did something together like a parent would like it. You know what I mean...

Wow, what a video that was. I've heard the cries of coyotes a couple of times really far off in the distance, I wasn't sure what it was my husband had to tell me. I have never seen one.

Their songs can be haunting. We had them in the woods when i was a kid and I'm learning they are around here too. Thankfully the noise was a woman walking her dogs, But they do wake me up if the windows are open. Getting cold so that will end shortly.

I love the photo of your dogs. We do not have coyotes here, but I hear the foxes during the night. It is not allowed to walk dogs during the night, not to disturb people who sleep.

@LadyDuck and @PaintsOnSlate when we delivered an early morning paper and left our home at 2 a. m. it amazed me the number of people that were walking pets between three and five in the morning.

@PainsOnSlate The owners of dogs are responsible not to make they bark during the night. If you really want to walk a dog after 10 pm, you can, but only if you are sure the dog will not bark.

They are in my area but they tend to stay in the woods, I haven't seen one in the 35 years we have lived here... My daughter had one after her chicken and it was attacked by my Grand-dog Zuzu. The chicken and the dog lived... but were kept out of site for a week to encourage the coyote to go somewhere else...

@JamesHxstatic She is a Belgian Malinois - a shepherd. It was completely a surprise to my daughter, she was very scared and ran out to save the dog and chicken. The coyote ran..

@PainsOnSlate What kind of dog is ZuZu? That was dangerous thing since coyotes are seldom solitary.

@anya12adwi They are wild dogs that mated with coyotes. I think sometimes they are crying. they do like to sing to the Moon...

I don't usually hear them either but did as a child. My daughter lives in the boonies so I hear them at her place. Sadly one got one of the chickens the other day, Zuzu the dog wasn't outside or she might have saved it again...

I have not heard cries of cayotes and coy dogs but I am certain I would find it too disturbing. But the picture of grapes growing in fields and woods everywhere is so beautiful in my imagination. I wish I could find the same scenery in my place but unfortunately grapes do not really grow well in our kind of weather.

You are a bit too warm for grapes. I do live in a beautiful area and love the scenes daily as I go from here to there. Now that it is getting cold I don't hear anything, the windows are closed because of the cold.

They don't cry at the moon? That's what the coyotes and coy dogs do, the sound is soulful.... In my area dogs can not be off lease or must stay in a fenced yard. Its the law and those who love their dogs make sure they are fenced...

I love the collage of your grand dogs... I haven't seen or heard coyotes.... I don't think we have them in the uk or spain... but ..we do sometimes walk our dog late at night..., and while he is quiet... busy sniffing ... if another dog hears us ..., then barking commences... which then sets up a chain reaction... all along the street. but it does quieten down again...

Our small town has law and the quiet hours and dogs are included with that.. Its hard to walk a dog and not hear barking. I think the woman who is walking here many dogs during the night must go to work at dawn, I heard her the other day at 4 AM. Its cold now so I won't be hearing anything with the windows closed.
