Invasion Of The Stink Bugs

That's right, we are being invaded by stink bugs. Within the last few days we have them everywhere outside. I know we have seen at least 30 of them on our balcony. I have never seen so many like this before but we do have woods all around us so I guess that is where they are coming from. I'm not afraid of stink bugs but, having that many around us makes me feel kind of creepy. Just thinking about it right now makes my skin crawl. I was wondering why they are all out right now so I googled it. Apparently at the end of summer, they start looking for warm places to stay for the winter. They try to get into homes through cracks and openings. Sometimes they spend the winter in attics or inside walls. During this time, which is called overwintering, they do not feed or reproduce. They start coming out again during the spring when it is warmer. I guess the good news about this is Fall must be right around the corner for us. The bad news is, I'm afraid they are going to kill my new plant that I have outside. I'm afraid to bring the plant inside right now because there may be bugs on it and I don't want them inside our home. I am hoping that as it gets cooler, the bugs will find somewhere else to go and I can then bring my plant inside.

Is there a way you could use a water spray to rid the plant of bugs so you could bring it in?

I don't know but it's definitely worth a try.

There are plenty here too and they try to come inside because it's already pretty cool outside. They make a loud noise if they fly near you. I am chasing them every evening before going to bed.

@simone10 Last year the winter was not cold enough, they have been around all the winter.

@LadyDuck I didn't know they came out in winter too. I don't see any of them this morning and it's a chilly 50 degrees.

They are trying to get inside our apartment too. They are so annoying. I'll be glad when they find their new homes and are gone.

We see them here and there, but rarely a whole lot of them at the same time. Yah, it's creepy to see a mess of 'em like that! I hope they leave your plant alone!

@simone10 Oh yah, that would totally make sense. We're in the "city", so we usually see them "alone" - not so much in groups.

@much2say Fortunately they all seem to have found their winter hiding places as I don't see anymore around.

I hope they do too. I've have never ever seen so many before but I think it's because we have woods with lots of trees around us.

I don't think that I've ever seen a stink bug around here. They sound pretty creepy though.

I've seen them in my little garden eastern here. Maybe they hitched a ride on # 95. They came and went though. They remind me of those armed dinosaurs but smaller.

Maybe you don't have them there. I have never seen so many at one time before and that's why I looked up info on them. And you know what? Evidently, they should be weathermen because this morning it's a lot cooler outside and looks like rain. It is supposed to stay cool this time.

Stink bugs smell really bad if you step on them. It would be bad having a bunch of them around. I hate bugs anyway. Maybe you could spray your plant before you take it in to make sure the bugs are gone.

@akalinus A few came out over the weekend. It was warmer that it had been so I guess they came out to enjoy the sunshine.

I hope they don't either. I'm worried about it. It's really thick and bushy and it's going to be hard if not impossible to check the whole plant before bringing it inside.

I know right? The temps are supposed to be dropping a little so I think they will probably go somewhere else to get warm other than my plant.

I rarely see a stink bug and I am pleased about this because they are ugly little insects. We get centipedes that come into the house for the same reason. They are weird things, look like little black worms but have loads of legs and roll up in a circle when in danger. If hurt in some way they stink too, they may have lots of legs but they do not resemble the wiry ginger things that move so fast, does anyone know what they might be from my description?

@jaboUK I think they are kind of like skunks, they don't really put off an odor unless they feel threatened or if you squash them.

You may not have them. And yes, they do live up to their name. They really do stink. Daisy loves to catch bugs on our patio but she will only sniff and walk away from stink bugs.

We had hundreds of these exact same bugs lurking around the doors and windows for several days and killed as many as we could to keep them out of the house. Last year was the same. Now, for a day or two there are none, but they may be back. I did not get close enough to notice an odor, but I thouhgt that stink bugs were large black bugs.

I researched them online just to make sure that is what they are called. From what I read, they come in groves like that when they are searching for warm places for winter. I think they are a good way to know when cooler weather is coming because two days after our invasion, we got some cooler weather.

We get those here in Texas too @simone10 but they're not near as irritating as a June Bug.

Normally they aren't irritating because you only see some every now and then. But when your balcony is covered in them, it can be quite irritating. So far, we haven't had any problems with June bugs.

I don' think we have that kind of bugs here but any bug that would kill new plants would be very alarming. I hope you could find ways to eradicate them.

I don't know, but I wouldn't think they'd hurt your plant. Did your research say anything about that or you could check. It's much later now, so maybe they've gone away. We had loads of them this year too, mostly at the homes where we washed windows. I don't really remember seeing them much before this year, but it seems like certain bugs overwhelm the area every few years and even though the ones from the past still come around, they're never as large a quantity as whatever ones are more prevalent in that year. I remember back in the late eighties/early nineties when earwigs were trying to come in via the windows and we saw them everywhere, then a few years later it was the Japanese beetles. While I still see both of those bugs each year, I don't see the oodles I did years ago.
