They Want Me Back

An organization I was employed with for over ten years changed ownership at the beginning of the summer, and the new company came in and cleaned house, telling everyone that they were taking things in a different direction. We all received our "pink slips," and a nice severance package, and then were sent on our way. Lo and behold, not three months later and the company has been calling me non-stop, begging me to come back to work for them. It seems all the bad things we warned them about when they took over have come to fruition, and they don't know how to fix it. So, they are calling me, asking me to come in and clean up the mess they created. Part of me wants to sit back and laugh and tell them "I told you so!" But, the part of me that misses the fun job I used to do wants to come running back to them with open arms! I'm going to sit on this for a little while, and see how desperate they'll get. They've already thrown in several great perks that would benefit me greatly, but I'm going to wait a little longer and see if they'll sweeten the pot a bit more. Have you ever been in a situation where you were let go from a job, and then later they begged you to come back? By the way, this job I had for over 10 years was not my main job. It was a part-time management job that I worked in addition to my regular career. I still am working my regular job that I have been at for 15 years. This other job was just some fun work on the side!

@Drosophila I don't want to squeeze anybody if I don't have to! Unless I'm hugging them, then I'll squeeze them gently! lol

Oh, so do you think you'll eventually take on this part time venture again (once they sweeten the pot?). Hubby was sort of in a similar situation, though he wasn't let go . . . he just found a better paying job period. But the old company begged him to come back and tried to give him all these perks, but sorry the income and perks could not even match what he was making now. The thing is, the old company was more personable and "socially" it was just fun to be there for him. But there's no way he could go back for some extra peanuts.

This was a part-time job that I loved doing, it was never about the money. It was just doing something I loved, and working with great people. If I go back, I want to know that I would still enjoy doing the job, and that the people I would be working with are people I would want to be around.

That is great, especially since you have the flexibility to bide your time about accepting the job. I hope they pile on the perks.

The two big offers on the table right now are the flexibility for me to make my own schedule and to work as many or little hours as I'd like; and the offer to give me a nice housing allowance to use toward my monthly bills. The extra money will be nice, but this is and has never been about the money. I want to make sure it is something I will enjoy doing again, since it will be taking up time from other enjoyable things I could be doing!

The money isn't a big deal to me, as I already have another full-time career. This other one was a fun part-time job to put a little spending money in my pocket. Plus, it kept me out of trouble! lol

@MissNikki Extra money is never a bad thing as long as you save it or put it to good use, like paying bills or saving up for a vacation!

Don't let them find somebody else...there comes a time when the employer's back also breaks...because of pay packets. You said you were in management, so you should know better about how far the can be stretched.

Hahaha! Well... go ahead and say, 'I told you so!' Haha. Anyway, take some time to think about if you really want to go back or not. I think it's best to consider what you think is good for you and what you want to do, in this decision, more than think about them. And as for their offers, I would keep in mind that they are desperate now that they are making those offers. I wonder if they'd actually be able to make good on them.

We'll have to see how good the offer is. Since the new company changed the way they are managing the business now, I may not like what they are doing now if I decide to go back.

This sounds like it would be very tempting. If you really want it, don't keep them waiting too long in case they change their mind.

They are not going to change their mind. They keep calling me every day. I keep telling them I will stop by their office as just soon as I get a break from my main job. They know how busy I get at my regular job, so they understand that sometimes I can't get free for long periods of time!

@moffittjc I think you should resume to the job as you should be knowing all ins and outs being in the same job for almost ten years.

But if the job is different now since the new company changed the way they run the business, I may not like the new work they are doing. It may not be the same as it way when I was there before.

@moffittjc Try to collect the itineraries and make a decisive approach while taking the job. It happens with every business that the work culture changes with the change of management, policies and numerous facets.

It is a gratifying feeling to know that things when downhill without and that they so desperately want you back. I would sit on it too for awhile. Just see where it goes and then you can make a decision.

I had never been in that kind of situation but if that will ever happen, I'll do the same as you did. Taking some time for their offer to be sweet. And once both parties agreed on the terms then I'll start cleaning their mess.

I've never worked for them yet...they got rid of all of us when they bought the company we worked for, so I never had a chance to work for this new company. They know they're going to have to earn my trust. Trust me, I've got a nice little list of "conditions" that I want them to meet before I will accept their offer.

My husband left a job six years ago because he was unhappy about some of the changes that had been implemented. Three years later, they approached him...What would be required to have him return? He went to the meeting with a list in his pocket. He let them talk first...they wanted him back in the worst way...his list never left his pocket....they offered him much more than he would have asked.

That's really good to hear! Many years ago, I had a head-honcho boss from another company try to steal me away from the company I was working for. I told her there was no way in the world I would leave my current job. She kept bugging me for more than a month. One day, we were at lunch, and she pulled out a piece of paper, wrote something on it, folded it, and slid it across the table from me. I knew she just wrote me an offer, but I didn't even open it. I slid it back, and told her not to insult me with her lowball offer (I was bluffing, I had no idea if it was a lowball offer or not). She turned bright red, pulled out another piece of paper, wrote another figure down, and slid it across the table. This time I looked, and after dusting myself off when I fell out of my chair, I immediately accepted her offer! She had offered me double the salary I was making at my current position!

I know, that's crazy, right? I am not even a full-time employee with them! But, even though I was only part-time for all those years, everyone that worked there said I was one of the best managers! Makes me feel good to be appreciated!
