National One-Hit Wonder Day

Today, the 25th of September, was "National One-Hit Wonder Day." It was a day to celebrate all those musicians out there that were able to crack the national or worldwide music scene and grace us with just one hit song, before fading back into obscurity. I heard one such song on the radio this afternoon: Eddie Grant's "Electric Avenue." I loved that song as a kid back in the 80's! I did a quick Google search of one-hit wonders, and VH1 actually ranked the top 100 one-hit wonders. As I scrolled through the list, it brought back many memories of songs I loved throughout the years. What's your favorite one-hit wonder song? If you can't think of any, try Googling VH1's 100 Greatest One-Hit Wonders and see if you remember any of the songs on the list!

It's weird, because "Achey Breaky Heart" actually does fall into that category, and is on the list of the 100 best one-hit wonders. But the weird thing is, Billy Ray Cirus has had other successful songs and a long music career, so technically he shouldn't be considered a one-hit wonder!

The one that comes to my mind is Macarena by "Los del Río", it was very popular, but to be honest I never liked that song.

That is one of those songs that people either love or hate! I liked it when it first came out, but the radio stations played it so much that I grew to hate the song from it being overplayed. And of course, that song seems to be played at every single wedding reception these days.

@moffittjc I had the same reaction and I am glad that here in Europe the song has been forgot. No one plays it again.

I had to look. I think "I'm too Sexy" was lots of fun, but so was the Macarena.

Lol! Is it wrong to answer your question with 'That Thing You Do'? Haha. Because when you say 'One-Hit Wonder', I automatically think of The Wonders, though they are a fictional band. *goes to listen to that song*

I wonder if there are some songs which are one hit wonders in some countries, but not in others. Like, if a band or artist is quite big in the UK but only manages to have one song which does well in the USA, would they then be considered as one hit wonder in the US. And vice-versa, obviously.

You've got a good point there, and I think you are correct. A band can be a big hit in one particular country, but a dud in another country. I wonder if anyone can think of an example where a band had a one-hit wonder in the States, but many hit songs in the UK? Can you think of any? I know when Queen first came to America, nobody liked them. They were a big hit in the UK, but for some reason just couldn't catch on in the US. Then, the song "We Will Rock You/We Are the Champions" came out and all of a sudden every Queen song was popular!

Hi there. This is my type of post. Eddy Grant. Electric Avenue. That does bring back some memories. I must have a quick look at the list you looked at and see how many of the one hit wonders in the UK made it to the Billboard chart in America. I wonder how many one hit wonders over here had more than one hit over there. The one I remember over here was Little Jimmy Osmond with Long Haired Lover From Liverpool back in the 70,s That song put me off him for life so if he ever had any more hits over here - sorry Jimmy.

When I wrote the post, I never thought about the fact that a band can have huge success in one country, but yet only have one hit song in another. I definitely wrote the post from my perspective as an American. I'm sure there are lots of British bands that had many hits in the UK but managed to only score one success in the US.
