How much sleep do you need?

I've been trying to work this out lately! As I feel I waste too much time sleeping! I sleep on average 8-10hrs, but I know I can do with sleeping 6 if needed. So, am curious, how much sleep do you need? And how much sleep can you get?

I can never sleep more than 8 hours at a time, and usually average between 6-7 hours of sleep each night. If I try to sleep longer than that, I get really cranky. And I'm no fun when I'm cranky!

@Drosophila When I was a university student, I lived on about 2 hours sleep a night. Never seemed to have a problem with a lack of sleep back then, but I sure couldn't do that now!

Every night I sleep around 6-7 hours, depending on how many times the baby wakes me through out the night.

I feel best with 8 hours, but Fibromyalgia kicks in sometimes, then it's miserable. People don't always realize the importance of getting enough sleep if they can.

ya, I know what you mean, for a while I was sleeping 6.5 hours every day due to work needs, whilst I can adjust to it.. I was very miserable.

6-8 hours is recommended. I do get 8 and sometimes 9, if I go to bed early. As much as I can after a long day on the computer and working out at the gym.

@Drosophila I hear ya! I once slept 11 hours, and was still tired! I guess we sleep as much as our body needs. Too bad work ruined it for me for 30 years! Lol!

Hello again I don't seem to need that much sleep. Infact the older I get the less sleep I seem to need. Probably 4 or 5 hours does the job for me. If I have been outside working in the fresh air all day maybe 6 or 7 hours. Long motorbike journeys seem to make me need more sleep but even then maybe a maximum of 8 hours. Like you I tend to think that sleeping is a waswaste of time. Time I can be doing other stuff. Just like now .

Well, for people our age, the recommended amount is supposed to be 8 hours, Wendy.... I usually sleep between 5 to 6 hours, but I take that sleep in cat naps at different times during the day and night. If I am not feeling well, I can sleep around the clock, which I did a few days ago. (I got home from work at 4:30 pm, told Pretty I was taking a nap and woke up the next morning at 6:30 am. She said I must have needed it.)

Well, As far as how much a person actually needs, I can't really speak on I'd say 6-8 ideally. For me personally, the sweet spot for sleep is between 3-5 hours. If I get less than 3 hours I feel like I can't wake up. If I get more then 5 hours I wake up more tired then when I went to bed, for me it's "too much" sleep. If I were to sleep 8-10 hours a day, I'd spend my wake hours fighting more sleep. It's a crazy vicious cycle. There are many nights were I only get 1-2 hours of sleep though.

@Drosophila yes. The struggle is very real. I have a bit of insomnia. It can be rough sometimes but my body has adapted to it.
