This morning, while I was working in the kitchen, I have seen a movement outside the window. I have move the curtain, and a little red robin was looking at me from the bird feeder. The European red robin is different from the American, it's the little bird that you can see in the picture. It's small like a sparrow and can live about 5/6 years. My little friend must be pretty old, this is the 5th year that it comes to spend the winter in our garden. It's a very friendly bird that does not fear humans and stays near me when I work outside. I am happy to seem that it came back, but this means that winter will come sooner this year. Do you have birds, or other animals, that announce the upcoming of winter? The image is from Wikipedia.

We have harsh winters here in Switzerland. I will be sure to put outside seeds and water so that the birds can eat even in winter.

Just as a matter of interest - how do you know it's the same one? We have some that visit us, they seem sweet little birds. We had them nesting in the Spring - where do you think they go in the summer?

This one has a small white feather on the right wing, it's the only one that I have notice with this unusual feather. It's the most friendly of all the red robins that come to my garden. He always come on the balcony in the morning while we take breakfast and it stays there staring at us. I am trying to find out where the go in the summer. My mom asked the same thing when I talked with her today.

How sweet it is! Every year the swallow family will fly to my parents-in-laws' house and stay there until next spring. We welcome them. It is quite interesting for me to see that they live with you. People say that if the swallows live in your house, it will give you good luck. No matter what, they already give us happiness

@LadyDuck I am surprised to hear that. Perhaps the swallows are good for the nature and therefore we created this tale so that people will take good care of them.

Wow, that is a very nice color for a robin you have there . Here, robins are only grayish . They usually would perch on the soursop tree or the fence at the backyard of the house facing the window of the kitchen sink .

It's amazing how there are one or two that come back to the same spot every year. Maybe it remembers the good bird food you put out for him. That's a beautiful picture.

I think that they remember where they found food and lodging. His small birdhouse is ready, hidden in the branches of the tree, waiting for him.

@HazySue Yes, they are very different from your red robins. They do not travel very long distance. During the summer they go up in the mountains because they do not like the hot weather. As the temperature cools down they come back to pass the winter in the hedges of the gardens, where they can find food.

Snowbirds arrive to announce Winter here in Florida. They arrive with campers, trailers, motor homes or just a variety of license plates. The highways become congested, the restaurants offer specials to entice them and the locals welcome back friends, just like you are doing.

I remember when we came to Florida in November, there were plenty of people from the northern states and Canada who came to spend the winter there. I loved the month of November in Florida.

No, I haven't noticed anything strange with what little wildlife we have but I did notice those big yellow spiders with the short legs are back, I don't think they are dangerous but if they bite it really hurts.

@antonbunot In fact they do not lay eggs, but they create a safe place where to spend the winter, they will lay the eggs the next spring and move to the trees in summer.

If you have cats this must be the reason. There is the cat of my neighbor that comes time by time, but the birds come early in the morning and the cat is not yet around.

@LadyDuck I hardly ever see a cat on the grounds, but I can't think of any other reason. At one time birds built nests in the eves of our deck. And I made pictures of birds perched on the swing and banisters.
