Blinded By Hatred

Is it possible to be actually blinded by our emotions? The phrases ‘blinded by anger’ ‘blinded by passion’, and in religious conversions, ‘blinded by the light’ are common. The phrase doesn’t refer to the eyes, but to our sense of reason. Someone angered into a revenge attack doesn’t think of the consequences assault or attempted murder might bring afterwards. The lover being used for money or other purposes is emotionally blinded to the negative aspects of his partner’s personality and behavior. In the Bible, Saul (later Paul) is blinded first by his zealous contempt for Christians, helping to hunt them down for the Pharisees, but when he has his vision of Christ he is rather literally blinded by the explosion of faith in Jesus on route to Damascus. His sight of anything outside that one track commitment is filtered out of his senses. Most of the time we are not blinded by our passions. Van Gogh painted in a frenzy, while most artists could handle inspiration better – staying in control, unblended. Blind drunk is different of course, as eyesight, and other senses or abilities fail to function in a state of intoxication. On the whole I am happier holding on to my faculties. I like to stay self-aware and in control. Arthur Chappell

"Blinded by the light, wrapped up like a deuce, another runner in the night", as the Manfred Mann song goes. I've certainly been in situations were I feel my passions have rendered me temporarily insane. I am hopefully back on the road to sanity now.

It could turn out positive sometimes; if Vincent Van Gogh did not paint that way, he could had not created great masterpieces, the "Starry Night," for one which I like the best.

@acelawrites absolutely - so sad that it cost him his life though, and he did inspire one of the greatest tribute songs ever, Don McClean's Vincent

I agree with the self-aware and in control part where many must not. There are qualities that I would want in a person that others I know personally have been blind to because of their emotions.

It's an interesting expression - being blinded by whatever. Don't know what else to say really.

Good topic to bring up for discussion. I guess being blinded is the term used when someone's emotion played role more than logic. And yes, it is important that we should be in control, no matter how much we like something, just going out somewhere randomly won't help. We should know where we're going.

I think that we should all have something we are passionate about in our lives. Makes it well worth living. But, as a rule I also think that everything in moderation is a good way to go forward.

Very nice and thought provoking post. I guess I do get blinded by my emotions and anger...but I try to remain reasonable.

I have never been blinded by hatred or by love either. I am rather logical.
