~Having No Power Won't Hold Us Down!~

It is official power will not be restored until Tuesday some time. It annoys us only because they fixed our whole street except 4 of us! Frustrating! But...yesterday was an amazing day for our family! We spent the day outside enjoying the breeze that we got. We played football and basketball while the baby was in his jumper watching us play. After we played for most of the day my husband cooked burgers and wings on the grill for us. It was a great day and dinner! We came inside and made shadow puppets with our flashlights. It was VERY hot when it was bedtime which was the tough part of the day. Without the distraction of tv and other devices we had a GREAT day as a family!! =) We did throw away a LOT of food that we don't have the money to replace but that's to be expected unfortunately.

My sister lost power for 2 weeks after Sandy. She had a whole freezer in the basement full of food that she had to throw away. She said that was the last time she kept a second freezer full.

@NJChicaa Yeah losing all of the food is the tough part. Our neighbors had 2 deep freezers full of food they lost too. I feel so bad for them. =(

I am always scared of losing food in the freezer too and don't fill it up as much as I used to.

We have gone 4 days without power in the past, why did you lose food? We usually don't open the freezer or fridge and pack things in coolers with ice. It lasts for several days and we cooked things since they last longer when they are cooked.

@Bellestarr We didnt have coolers or money to buy them. Our freezer was entirely melted, ice was water this afternoon. Its extremely hot here.

@LovingMyBabies That is too bad, I am sorry, We started cooking immediately and hoped for the best. I am surprised though that if the door seals well that your freezer didn't stay frozen longer. I hope you will be able to get the food you will need for the kids.

@BelleStarr We rent this house and nothing works the way it should so it really doesn't surprise me at all. It's not like we have top of the line, new appliances-we do not. He put the cheapest things he could find here so he could rent it out...

That happened in our park after one of the hurricanes a decade ago. They turned on power in part of the park, but we had to wait a few more days. I don't know why they play favorites. Our power was out for over a week while the rest of the park had it.

@akalinus I don't know why they play favorites either, it's very annoying though!

@LovingMyBabies It will be so good when you get it on. You really appreciate electric when you don't have it.

You can become very imaginative when you don't rely on electronics for entertainment.

You got hit with matthew too? Our house has been without power sine Friday, so even the food in the chest freezer will be thawed out soon if not already. :( We're staying at a hotel that is over charging which sucks. We are going to TRY to go home tomorrow, but are liekly to be without power for several more days. I told my family we'll just have to think of it like we're camping out.

@nonersays Oh yeah we got hit too. It was Friday evening that we lost power here. We didn't have money for a motel or hotel and our vehicle isn't running right so we were stuck at home. Yeah its not bad during the day since there has been a nice breeze but at night it has been hot in our house. I hate sleeping in the heat and so does my 8 month old. =( We cannot wait for Tuesday!

It's a shame you had to throw out food but great that you turned a sort of negative into a great big positive.

Yeah, unfortunately it's unavoidable with the food... Here the power company will reimburse customers a fixed amount when the power is out for over 12 hours. Glad you had a great family day!

Situations like this make you realize that maybe you should do what you did once a week @LovingMyBabies . It let's you know what is more important. As far as the food goes, you should have had a cooler with ice.
