My Dad and his Girls

I had a conversation on here with somebody about having five sisters and then jokingly said "My poor Dad." The person did not find that to be funny and then I tried to explain myself but of course it never comes out right. So it got me thinking and I thought I would write a discussion about my Dad growing up in a house full of girls. I have five sisters and no brothers so my Dad lived in a house with my mom and six of us girls. He was grey at a very young age and everybody use to tease him about us doing that to him. When I say "My poor Dad." I don't mean that it was a bad thing because he didn't have any sons. Mom actually had a baby boy. He was the third born but he was premature and only weight 1 lb when he was born. He lived for 24 hours. I often wondered what it would have been like to have a brother. Every year we celebrated his special day with a cake. Mom and Dad always said it was one of the hardest thing they ever had to do was bury their baby boy. He is buried along side mom and dad. Dad always loved his little girls and we were Daddy's girls. When we were little we would all fight for his attention at the same time. We would follow him around and want to help him work on his car or whatever else he was doing at the time. My Mom would be in the house cleaning and getting meals and we would be out following Dad around asking endless questions but it never bothered him at all. "My poor Dad"....As we got older he had to put of with girls fighting over the bathroom, make up everywhere. He would wait for a chance when he could finally have the bathroom for himself. He had to listen to the bickering, the arguing, the drama and the many moods and with that many girls under one roof there were many moods in our house. He had to put up with countless number of guys wanting to date his daughters which most of them he didn't approve of and then he would have to listen to us cry because our hearts got broken yet again. He took it all in stride though. He stayed up late at night and never slept until the last of his girls were home, tucked safely in bed. I never knew why he worried about us so much until I had children of my own. He had to walk each of us down the aisle and give us to somebody else when in his eyes we were still just Daddy's little girls. He was always there for us. He was our Hero. We certainly put him through a lot, "My poor Dad". He comforted us, he cried with us and we were so proud to call him Dad. So when I say "My poor Dad." I mean he grew up in a house filled with girls and never once complained about that. His brothers and his friends all has sons but he was quite content with all this girls. He might not have always understood why we did what we did but he was there for us. Mom was one of us so she better understood what we were going through as young women. Sadly Dad passed away in October 2000 but I often think of all the things we endured as a family and how he always believed in us. He may not have always approved of our choices we made in life but he was there to catch us if we fell. My Mom and the six of us were Daddy's girls and he loved us all dearly. We were blessed to have such an amazing Dad.

I think many of us know what you meant by "My poor Dad" - 5 girls would certainly keep a parent on their toes . But it certainly sounds like he was content - this was his family - his love and support for you gals was there all the way. Your poor dad was in fact quite rich .

Aw he sounds a lot like my husband. =) I wish my father was a good dad but he never was. I'm grateful we had a loving mother though. I completely understand when you say your poor dad because that's a lot of girls! Lol.

That's a lovely tribute to your Dad. Mine was surrounded by girls too, but there were only 3 of us, plus mum of course. It's odd when people don't catch the humour in the things we say. I posted a funny poem on another site, and someone remarked that it was sad. She didn't see the tongue in my cheek!

@Happy2BeMe Yes, parents are always very proud of their children but especially Asian parents don't really express themselves. My wife and I always tell our son how proud we are of him, reasuring him and giving him encouragement and confidence in whatever he does
