Writing up a weekly menu and grocery list

Each week we sit down and face each other. We sit and think and discuss a very important topic: what's for supper for the next week! Inquiring minds need to know. So if someone gets a meal they didn't like, its not the cook's fault. I like this sitting down together though many times its a matter of almost yanking teeth from the head. Somebody will say, We already had that particular meal last week and the week before. Can't you come up with something else? Then its I am craving this and I liked that. Its all good and yep, at times lively. How to dress up the almighty bean and rice. Noodles? You bet. Can't stand that vegetable! Need something crunchy. Tomorrow we head into town and buy from our list and stick to it. Shopping is almost restful after we've got the menu scratched out on an old envelope.

We'll do something similar - but it's more in the form of making the list itself. We both know what we generally like so we'll get the things we need for it, but leave room for improvisation. For instance, I found some absolutely beautiful flash frozen Pacific cod steaks, as well as some mackerel steaks, so we substituted those for a couple of meals.

Do you put your coupons inside that old envelope?

@marlina When I have a coupon it goes into the envelope. Our food mostly isn't covered by coupons- little processed stuff.

@sallypup I know what you mean, we don't have many coupons either, but when we do we put them in the "grocery list envelope", very convenient.

@marlina I don't know of any coupons that cover food like carrots or cabbage.

I try to do that but it never works as picky as my husband is. L.O.L. We just buy what we need like meat and vegetables. I get most of my can food from the food banks around here, I feel Blessed there are places like that to help us. It saves us some money here. And we buy the neccessities like bathroom and Kitchen things you know paper towels, toilet paper, shampoo, soap, e.t.c.

We have a freezer full of food so some days I say to my husband, "surprise me" and some days I know what I want to cook but I don't make lists or plans.

@AbbyGreenhill We have freezer food too but we need fresh produce to go with it.

@sallypup Of course, so do we. But my husband only eats a few veggies, so it limits things...since I like most of them...in summer we don't buy - we grow.

@AbbyGreenhill I try to grow things, too. Bugs ate our squash but the tomatoes and peppers did well. My hubby wants off his diabetes meds. He is now eating stuff I did not think he ever would accept.

could start lists of all the meals liked, and consult that too, because that might cycle some back in that get forgotten

Oh boy! These kinds of discussion seems like its never gonna end. But, I liked the idea of cooking something new according to everyone's wish every week. How many are the people here?

@RitzView This discussion is pretty lively! Three adults in my house.

@RitzzView It can be hard. One person gets sick of eating a particular food then another person says they can't stand that and it goes on.

@sallypup Oh..three adults could do this job sooner. I've had such discussions with 7-10 people. .and luckily it had been rare

I think that this must help kids learn to negotiate and be a good player.

I am also in charge of all the cooking and even though it's just I and the boyfriend, there are days that coming up with something to prepare for dinner is a struggle. I hate whenever I receive an "I don't care" or "whatever you like" answers; especially when he will end up not liking the dinner that much.

That's an interesting way to go about the week's menu. It also saves on groceries. You aren't buying what you don't need.

I always make a menu before my grocery list so that way I know what we have and what we need to get. I always try to come up with different things. Sometimes when I feel in a rut I'll search the internet and I love the cooking shows on food network.

This seems like a good idea...why did I never think of it before?
