Say Hello To Dmitri

Dmitri is an Eurasian Eagle-Owl hatched under human care at the World Bird Sanctuary in St. Lois, Missouri. At the age of two, he was sent to the Cascades Raptor Center here in Eugene, Oregon to be a part of the education and outreach team and to help raise funds for the work the center does in rescuing injured eagles, owls, falcons, hawks and even vultures. They are injured and so no longer able to hunt for food. Under federal law, only non-native species can be used to do shows and educate people about endangered raptors. Dmitri was a guest fundraiser yesterday at the wild bird store (seeds and feeders, not birds) where I work. I think I heard someone say that he was featured in a Subaru commercial and some others as well. Dmitri even has his own Facebook page.

A very handsome creature. I spotted an owl in our garden a few months back. It was very exciting to see one as I don't spot them very often.

Yes, they are not easy to see, being mostly nocturnal and so well camouflaged.

@JamesHxstatic I can remember taking my kids to some bird of prey centre when they were small and this guy had an owl out on display. The kids were watching it in fascination and this guy kept saying to them in quite a cross voice, "you can't have an owl for a pet." The kids hadn't even asked for an owl for a pet, so I don't know why he kept saying it, but he wasn't very friendly at all. Even now, 20 odd years later, whenever we see an owl, my now grown-up daughters always pipe up with - "you can't have an owl for a pet!"

Hello Dmitri. He is a handsome bird. We have the World Center for Birds of Prey here in Idaho. They get injured birds in and take care of them. They also bring wild ones out to share with visitors and talk about how they live and such. Very interesting place to visit. Also help endangered birds around the world. I think raptors are some of my favorite bird.

Dmitri looks very imperious. I wonder why only non-native species can be used for education purposes? We saw several owls at various fetes and functions when we were in England but I don't think I've ever seen them on display here.

I think it is because it would invite exploitation of the various species.

Oh wow. I love owls. He's majestic. I wonder if I can go to a local raptor center , if they let people tour - I would love to interact with an owl. Was he well behaved? I will like his Facebook page

He sat on his perch and took everything in. For some events, he is allowed to fly over the audience and back to his handler. We did have to turn off a video that we run at the store that shows birds feeding and chirping away. It seemed to get his attention. Our raptor center can be visited daily.

Such beautiful creatures. It is good that there are groups able to care for what can't return to their natural habitat.

Dmitri looks beautiful. I wonder why native species can't be used to educate people? If they have been injured and can't live in the wild any more, where would be the harm?

I'm not sure. But that might lead to other birds being injured if there was a dollar in it
