My Daughters and Granddaughters are Heartbroken

Most of the people I know who are pleased with the outcome of the U.S. political election have been gloating all day and telling everyone how they knew they were right. That may be true. However, my daughters and granddaughters have sought me out for comfort all day. Their husbands, boyfriends and sons are also upset by the election. My Jewish grandson did not want to go to school. My niece who is married to a Brazilian did not want to send her daughter to school, because there has been bullying by white students against even the children of legal Latino parents. Racism is running out-of-control in our public schools. They are all devastated ... despite my encouragement that we will survive this and life will go on. My daughters are all strong, capable, competent women. They have had successful careers as teachers, a buyer for a major department store, and a business manager for famous entertainers. One was even a very successful fashion model in her late teens and early 20s. They all wanted to believe that a woman could become President. Ironically, Hillary Clinton actually won the popular vote. By the time all of California's votes are counted, Clinton will have won the popular vote by millions of votes. But she still will not become president. While I accept it, my heart breaks for my upset daughters, my granddaughters and their families. They are especially upset that she was beaten by a man who was so self-centered, unkind, uncharitable and cruel towards women and the less fortunate. I wish I could fix this for them.

I feel for you, your daughters and granddaughters. I feel the same way. We lost and it hurts. We are all in trouble though. He is a maniac and a self centered a-hole. He also could start a major world war. Which, by the way, would be the end of it all. One push of a button and that's it. America is now totally divided. And hate crimes will only get worse. A sad day in american history.

@DeborahDiane Exactly. He is and so are the tea party a-holes. Nothing is going to stop them now since they run the house and senate. Sad for everyone in this country.

@inertia4 - the next four years are going to bring about a lot of changes. I hope they don't run the economy into the ground like Bush did ... and then had to have it rescued by the Democrats. Their economic ideas simply do not work, although they keep trying them.

when the right gal comes 'long, she'll be president. i fear that mrs. clinton jest didn't fit the bill. i know what'cha mean by young'uns bein' bullied 't school - so many're misinformed by their parents'n the media. my eldest grandson t'was quite 'pset when fellow students told him that his grands (their adopted side) 'n the rest 'f the family'd be deported coz their hispanic. a bunch 'f hooey, 'f course, they've been legal citizens 'f this country fer o'er 40 years. i encourage folks not to be so down-trodden by the election results, to give that fella a chance. sadly i've seen more bashin' 'f him 'n americans'n general via social media than those gloatin' that he won.

@DeborahDiane e'en the grands from the hubs step-daughter who're half black 're feelin' the pinch. sadly these ugly comments 'n rumors 're spread by the parents, social media 'n the news folks who're 'pposed to remain unbiased by but seem to lack that sorta self-control. folks need to start facin' the responsibility 'f their words 'n actions'n order fer that ugliness to change. i doubt such'll occur'n my lifetime, but i remain hopeful fer the future generations - when folks can look 't what folks 've to offer'n the inside.

@JudyEv - Apparently, Trump's followers believe they can be blatant racists. Kids have been filmed walking through schools yelling "white power" and "go home" and "build the wall," while minority children are sitting nearby, crying. It is horrible. Some white people keep telling everyone to "relax, everything will be fine" or "get over it." However, the sight of those children just breaks my heart. When Trump was asked if he regrets the racist tone he took, he said, "No. I won." Disgusting. When people ask why we are still upset three days after the election ... that is why.

Many many of my friends, relative, women, children in our home, people in general wanted Hillary to be President. India had a woman Prime Minister long ago. Sri Lanka had a woman president long ago. Even Israel had one woman PM. Why a superbly developed country USA couldn't elect a woman president even in the 21st century?

@franxav and @JamesHxstatic - Yes, sexism and racism are very strong in the U.S. ... especially in the middle part of the US known as the Bible Belt. Isn't it ironic that so-called Christians are the most unkind, racist and sexist ... despite Jesus telling them the story of the Good Samaritan, which is about a foreign man with a non-Jewish religion.

But would you have felt any sympathy for those whose hearts would have been broken had Clinton won? Been understanding and compassionate of their being upset? Do you claim that your side would not have gloated had she won? Do you understand than many had good reason to consider your candidate a despicable person? Your side always accuses the right of hate yet I have seen nothing but venomous hatred by many on your side over the outcome.

I have a number of Republican friends who grappled with this decision ... as I wrote about in another article. Yes, I would have been sympathetic. However, my candidate was NOT a despicable person. She has spent her entire life helping other people. The Republicans did a smear job on her. They had hearings almost non-stop for years and never ONCE were they able to convict her of a crime. Whatever happened to innocent until proven guilty? The Republicans crucified her with innuendo.

@JamesHxstatic - I agree that Trump is a dangerous fool with the temperament of a four year old. In addition, I don't think he had any idea what he was getting into. He seems completely surprised by what the job entails. He didn't know that it would involve hiring 4,000 appointees. As a result, his advisors are making a awful lot of the decisions for him ... and I don't trust his closest advisors, either.

So many women in Middle America have been raised to have low self-esteem ... and they don't even know it. They grew up being told that all they had to do is look good, act nice, dress pretty, worry about their hair and makeup ... and a big, strong man will take care of them. They accept what they are told, and don't know how devastating that is to a woman's self-esteem. Our new president even believes that the most important aspect of a woman is how she looks.

As with the Brexit vote this was a statement by the people that they are sick and tired of a ruling political elite who live in a political bubble where, unlike many ordinary working people, they remain completely unaffected by the day to day consequences of their own policies. Regarding the fact Hillary won the popular vote then I have said elsewhere on here that it in the case of a straightforward popularity contest, which is effectively what the presidential election is, then I believe it should go purely on the popular vote. But the rules are the rules. Everyone knows them when they decide to run. Maybe, rather than everyone feeling sorry for themselves and assuming the worst, this result should be used as a catalyst for electoral reform.

When I went to bed Trump had the popular vote. I just checked and he's only behind the popular vote by a couple hundred thousand not millions. I understand what you are saying, and although I voted third party, I am VERY happy Clinton is not our president elect. I have a lot of misgivings about Trump and fears too regarding him, but if he does what he intends to do things could turn around. I don't say they will, but they could.

The votes across the country are NOT all counted, even now. Here in California they announced on the news today (Nov. 10) that it would be at least another month before all the votes are counted in our state. In our little California county alone, there are still 400,000 votes to be counted and she has been winning those votes two to one. By the time they are finished counting, the California government department responsible for counting votes estimates she will have won by a minimum of 2,000,000 votes ... and probably more ... because other states which she won, such as Washington and Oregon, have not finished counting, either. With our crazy system, however, it doesn't matter. In addition, Clinton was NOT a bad person. She has spent her entire life helping other people. The Republicans did a smear job on her. They had hearings almost non-stop for years and never ONCE were they able to convict her of a crime. Whatever happened to innocent until proven guilty? The Republicans crucified her with innuendo. The bright spot is that I am sure she will go on to do good things for other people ... just like she always has. Trump, on the other hand, didn't even give to a charity for the past 8 years. It is hard for me to think that he is going to change the lives of more than a few thousand people ... and he will promote those things endlessly!

@just4him - Yes, and when another month has passed and they have counted all the mail-in and provisional ballots (which happen when someone votes at a place near where they work rather than near their home), she will probably have won the popular vote by 2,000,000 to 4,000,000. I still believe that it is a principal of American law that people are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law ... unless Fox News and the Republicans decide to smear your name. Then, you're a goner.

@DeborahDiane I'm not a Trump fan. I didn't vote for him. I'm sorry, you can't convince me of Hillary's innocence. I did my best not to listen to all the campaign rhetoric and the slander from both sides. I didn't vote for either of them as I do not feel either of them are fit for the presidency. She did carry the electoral votes for California, Oregon, and Washington.

@Mike197602 - You are wrong Mike. The popular vote is still being counted here in California (the electoral votes were awarded to her before they were finished counting the votes.) When they are done, they estimate that she will have won the popular vote by between 3,000,000 and 4,000,000 votes. It is so sad. My daughters and granddaughters called me in tears all day today. They are heartbroken and so discouraged that such a cruel, uncaring, insensitive man could be moving into the White House, despite losing the popular vote. One of them is married to a successful scientist and she begged him this morning to accept a job in another country. They may move ... and take two of my grandchildren with them. The Trump supporters who are gloating literally make me want to vomit.

@DeborahDiane I really did not know that I thought it was done and dusted and she won the popular vote by a hundred thousand or two. That's what is showing up on graphics I've searched and seen here, I didn't know counts were still going on. That just makes it even more unfair than I thought as winning by millions is just wrong if you don't become president.

@Mike197602 People are impatient and some for good reason so they can go to sleep. If they know for sure something has won they will call it while still counting the scraps so to speak. It is not really a shocker California went to Clinton one way or another. I do get your point, ethically probably should wait, but there was nothing moral or ethical in this election.

I don't think Trump is pro-anything, other than making money for himself. He is not even going to put his assets in a blind trust, so he can make decisions that will help him personally. He is not a good man, I am sorry to say. I think his policies will hurt India because he wants to end trade agreements and stop giving aid to other countries.

@DianneN - The election was very disappointing. I am trying to be open-minded about it, but his choices in people for the cabinet just seem to be getting worse and worse ... like an EPA guy who doesn't believe in climate change, an advisor who is extremely right wing, etc. He also keeps changing his mind about what he supports and doesn't support ... and some of his statements seem to be the opposite of what the establishment Republicans think, which means even his more moderate statements could be overridden by them. The bond market has lost $1 trillion in the past week. I don't think I am alone in being perplexed about what will happen in the coming years. (sigh)
