Okay, You’ve Worn That Subject Out

I called my brother and we talked for a bit. Shortly after we hung up he called me back. Then he started talking about a subject and went on and on and on about it. After about an hour of listening to him repeat himself I finally said, “Okay, you’ve worn that subject out.” “Well, you’re so bullheaded you never listen to what anyone says,” he said. “I want to make sure you hear what I’m saying.” I heard him and was getting just a bit on the far side of irritated. “You’ve wore that subject out, too,” I said. “I knew you didn’t pay any attention to what I said.” Then he hung up. After a few hours he’ll cool down. Do you have any relatives or friends who will get started on a subject and just doesn’t know when to quit?

Ohhhhh yes - I know quite a few people like that! They will go on and on and on . . . they don't realize they hog up the entire conversation. But it's good you can be blunt with your brother like that - I've always been the fool to listen to the whole darn story (that never ends).

I realized I had to get blunt with my brother several years ago when I woke up to the fact that he was trying to get me to do things he could do on his own. Once he realized I wasn't going to be a push over he backed off. Ever since then I haven't had any problems being blunt with him.

@RichardMeister I guess you have to be straightforward with these kinds of people or else they will run all over you. Either getting you to do things for them or burn your ears off . . . as my friend always says "I don't have time for this nonsense" .

I have a friend like that - I try to change the subject but she just won't get distracted from her rant. I do like that she feels so strongly about things though. Too many people just don't bother to care about anything.

This is true but after hearing someone repeat the same old thing over and over becomes a hair pulling event. You just want to scream at the person, "I heard you the first 500 times. Now shut up!"

Yes I have lots of relatives that act that way. Plus some do not like it if you disagree with them.
